Wonder if National Geographic will sponsor us? I mean if people can paddle a kayak from Aus to NZ surely we can party from LA to Hawaii?

If you go to Hawaii, make sure to catch a big one at the North Shore.
If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done.

So, we know what everyone thinks you should do now... but what do YOU want to do? What is your travel goal here? I found myself making some recommendations, but then realized that we don't know enough about why/how you travel.
For example, one of my goals as an American is to drive Route 66 and see as many of the cheesy roadside attractions and weird motels as possible (biggest ball of twine, etc.) To a lot of people, that would be a stupid trip. But it's something I'd like to do--drive secondary roads through the country and just appreciate how big it is.
I also wouldn't build my trip around national parks.
One of my very favorite places in the US is the Pacific Northwest--specifically, Northern, coastal California.
But I'll save my recommendations till I know what you're trying to do/see. IMO, the US is just too big to see everything you want to see, even in 4 weeks, unless you have a good plan and a goal.

Also, this may be completely off the mark, but: I don't know how much you've traveled in Australia/New Zealand, but you might think about an epic Australia trip with the same budget as your US trip.
Whenever I plan a trip overseas, I think of what I could do in the US as well (sometimes even just in NC), just so I have some alternatives to consider. What I've realized many times is that what I really want in a vacation is much closer than I think.
Other times, though, I really just have to travel (like, I really want to go to Mediterranean Spain).

sept/oct is the perfect time to visit the adirondacks....... someone here i think has a house up there that could be used for a huge ausi/nsop party....

You better not loose me
You have a good point Mark. I have listed a few things I want to see and not all national parks stuff. WHere is the Smithsonian? THat would be cool!
I have travelled over a lot of Aus and haven't been OS in about 6 years so I am keen to get out and about. I traveled around Europe a lot as well but I really want to get to Scotland and check out my heritage. I picked the US not only because of you ferals but also because I haven't been there since 1985 and there is a lot of stuff that interests me. 4 weeks would never be enough and I will be playing tourist not Hiker but still want to see some of those magnificent places. Route 66 cheesiness would be fantastic. Guess I want to see a wide range of things but not enough time. Need to narrow my idea.

yeah, good point. Alter your plans so all rental cars are picked up and dropped off in the same place. Usually when you do that (and make sure when you do it) you get unlimited miles. They'll be a little bit/
when you drop it off, but whatever. So for the east coast, use NYC or Boston for it (and DO NOT rent at the airport) and for the west coast use either LV or LAX...
OR!!!! Bring $500 cash, buy a clunker at a cheap used car lot, and have a blast, then just leave it "top gear" style.
exactly
that would be EPIC!!!
yeah, I agree honestly. Look at our Canada trip. It was highways to the border and to Quebec basically, then secondary roads the entire rest of the trip (some 95 back home the last day). Hell, we spend ~3 days on DIRT roads!and it was an amazing trip.
I'd also LOVE to do 66, and another one that would probably suck even more, route 1 from ME to Key west?!.
yeah, when I do that it's because they have good campgrounds near them typically.I also wouldn't build my trip around national parks.I love NPs, but I also love the random crap in the middle of nowhere between....
YES!!!
but yeah, as Marks pointing out, I don't think any of us are thinking you'll take OUR plans, we're just tossing out suggestions. If you come, you'll have fun. I also agree with Mark in the staying local could also be nice, but I won't encourage that as it'd be rad to see you come up and do a tour.

|

Yeah, I'm not advocating that, just suggesting it. We'd love to see you on your way down the East Coast if you did that.
The Smithsonian's in Washington, DC, btw.
And I agree with Ben that there's some fun stuff in between the NPs... and if you were a big hiker/landscape shooter, then hitting up all the NPs would be a great goal. I'm just saying that's not how I'd do it.![]()

I was gonna reply to this last night, but I needed a clearer head first. Anyway, NYC is great. One of, if not the best big cities in the world. People would probably argue with me at nauseum about that, but whatever. As far as the rest. Go see the USA for its great things. Not Disney, and the like. Go see the National Parks. Plus concentrated in the west, you could see quite a few in a week's time. You wouldn't be able to spend as much time. But given the option for me, National Parks, or Disney, I would choose the NP's every day and twice on Sunday.

No, not selling the Civic yet... I would like to, but my mom wants me to keep a car around for when she visits... which is like 2x a year...
I posted photos of the Civic a long time ago, but haven't in awhile. It's kind of neglected, and has a long dent down one side, so I don't take photos of it anymore.
But it's been a great car over the last 7 years and I've only had to take it to the shop for non-scheduled maintenance twice during that whole time, and that was to fix a power window thing that was a defective design.
That's part of the reason for the Bimmer--I figured I've had enough good car karma with the Civic and now the Fit that I can live with a little bad car karma for awhile (though I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised).

to much to read and catch up on all the above but you need to detour to greensboro/reliegh/durham area!!!
you'd be more than welcome to crash on my couch for a night/nights...

rent her something?
wait, so did you buy it new? It seems like you had it longer... It's just I've had the WRX for 6 years now and it seems like forever, but we're trying to make both of our current (paid off) vehicles last as long as possible... But I need a new windshield, brakes (pads and rotors) and tires by the end of the month for my inspection sticker. But it's been a great car over the last 7 years and I've only had to take it to the shop for non-scheduled maintenance twice during that whole time, and that was to fix a power window thing that was a defective design.![]()

That's what we'd prefer, but she'd rather have one of our cars... I don't know, don't ask. I've tried to talk her out of it, and I will still probably sell the car at some point.
It's a '99 that I bought in '02 with 40k miles on it... so, I've had it for 7, and it's 10 years old. I paid it off early in '04, so I haven't been making payments on it in years. We only have a three year loan on the Fit, and only 10 payments more to go on it if I don't pay it off early.wait, so did you buy it new? It seems like you had it longer... Aussies and Kiwis, dont "do" domestic "epic" trips like this... we grow up doing these with friends and family...
Kiwis and Aussies, have perpetual itchy feet, and cant stay still for too long... Warus has done well to stay put as long as he has
This IMO is why, Aussies and Kiwis could point to "most" countries on a globe first attempt, and the majority of Americans wouldnt have a clue what a globe isj/k (but I deal with ignorant people everyday, that think New zealand is in europe somewhere (a disgusting amount actually) and that every Aussie house has a crocodile and kangaroo in their garden)...
We are intrepid travellers, and the journey is 70% of the adventure.
If you get homesick, you have a place to stay in Boston with some Kiwis![]()

Awesome thank you all for the generous offers. So much to consider and kiwi sums it up nicely. It's almost a rite of passage in your early 20's to go OS for an extended period of time and usually work somewhere. We didn't go to the same place every year in Aus on holidays growing up but traveled all over the shop. Maybe I should do the East coast and West separately. Can I really buy a $500 car that will actually run?

Bumpo.
Will start looking for flights come the new year me thinks. I have firmed on the idea of 4 weeks total. Possibly fly to Washington DC then drive?? to NY, then up to Niagra then across to Boston, RI way. Fly to Las Vegas to see the Canyon, then drive to San fran via Yosemite then home. I would like to see if we can get a lot of the NSOPer's together somewhere along the trip for a meet up. Mid Sept- Mid October. I can be flexible if that lines up with something or other. Just keeping this thread in peoples minds who might also like to make a journey.

I live an hour from Denver Airport and would be more than happy to show you around. I haven't been to Yellowstone but I've been everywhere in-between in Wyoming and it's 8 hrs of cattle range and "high desert" nothingness to get there.
~BUT~ A day touring Colorado would be pretty epic: Estes Park, Rocky Mt. National Park, the ski towns, amber waves of grain, ghost towns and some wicked mountain roads. In Colorado Springs you can drive to the top of Pikes Peak~14000 feet, Garden of the Gods, The Great Sand Dunes, Royal Gorge Bridge, oh and Denver. I do see you've dropped it from your itinerary but I'm telling ya it's much easier to see it all from the passenger seat versus trying to stay on these mt. roads, especially at the speed the locals want to be going. If you still want a day or two in the Rockies and experience life with little oxygen, lemme know.

adirondacks
adirondacks
adirondacks!
ADIRONDACKS MOTHER ****ER!!!!
|

I'd go to Niagara from DC, THEN to NYC and RI/Boston. Also, the Adirondacks are between Niagara and RI/Boston. Niagara is just way out in western NY (where Stupid lives), Adirondacks are on the other side of that state, the MA is ~3 hours wide with Boston on the far side from NY (we're right under Boston on the way to NYC or from).
I say we either do the Adirondacks trip WITH YOU, or EARLY THANKSGIVING at my house, OR BOTH!!! We could double up on the weekends back to back with you checking out NYC and Boston in between (we're 3 hours from NYC here in RI then Boston is another hour north).

My couch is free, for sure.
I think you'd be best flying city to city, renting a car and seeing a few areas around each one, except in the bigger cities use taxis and stuff.
I think I I was picking my 'greatest hits' I'd do Denver & the rockies a bit, NYC & drive up to Boston/NE, Florida and do disney (they don't have that by you do they?), San Fran & do yellowstone and drive to seattle, then back down by oregon.
|
|
I'd basically do NE and Rockies/West Coast if it were me. The west is massive and vague I know, so you'd have to fill in where YOU want to go, but remember, I did this in ONE week:
obviously skip the 2 days from here to CO, but CO out to the west coast could work, and a spur north to Jellystone would be sick. DC is ~3 hours from NYC which is ~3 from here which is ~1 from Boston. Add in the adirondacks and niagara and that'd also be an epic loop.
FL is cool, but unless you feel a NEED to go to Disney I might skip it.
and really of the two loops, as much as I want you to come here, I'd do west over east if I had to pick, but with 4 weeks you should have time for both.
