I have, but I didn't think they looked like a mini-van. To be honest I prefer the older models and even Foresters over Outbacks. If it was me I'd be buying one of these hands down.

yeah, I saw another one driving on the highway yesterday. I honestly thought it was some other brand car, then when I saw the scoob logo I was thinking if there was a new tribeca I forgot... Then I realized it. What they've done with the current outback is to make it a crossover to compete with the verenza and it looks like total ****. We REALLY wanted the diesel option that's due either this or next year, but if it looks like that turd no way. I usually warm up to new models, but no way in hell with that thing.

Yeah they are pretty horid. I thought it was a tribeca the first time I saw one. Just ugly. I really don't like the direction subaru has taken in the last 3 years. They had arguably one of the best performing and best looking sedans in it's segment in the Legacy GT, and now look at it. Just awful. I will probably never buy another brand new Subaru.

Yeah I really wish the Forester STi would have shown up for real, not that psuedo Forester STi. I would have probably traded in the WRX for one. I saw a couple in Singapore, and they look just awesome, and go like stink.

It's what could have been a Pontiac G8 Sport Wagon, that is if Pontiac hadn't died.

GM is considering rebadging the G8 as a Chevy.

the wagon version is/was one of the best looking and understated sports wagons around IMHO. Now it's gone from the line completely?

the one from WBM a few years back is what sold me on the concept. IMHO, if I had the time and money, converting a sport like they did would be a LOT of fun and not too expensive since they give you most of the motor (the expensive part). Swap the suspension, and go stage 2 with it and that's one hell of a vehicle IMHO.

I've always preferred legacies personally, but that outback is good enough looking it's on our list (used obviously) when we finally need a new car. When they finally gave solid color options that helped a lot. My old one wasn't half bad except for the gray stickers on the bottom half.

with the power, I get that. But the mileage, it's good for low 20s I'd assume. But that's more of an AWD tradeoff than power really as it's a turbo.

but yeah, the jetta sportswagon gets more than double the mileage, is just as nice inside, not bad outside and can be modded for power if you wanted it (better mileage as well ).

You nailed it, Ben. Double the mileage ftw and I've always wanted a diesel.

Anyone know how the TDI does with short trips? If I get the job in SF I'd only be driving a few miles to the BART station.

new diesels don't have glow plugs or any of that **** if that's what you mean. Basically, they're not BAD on short trips, but they're better on long trips if you know what I mean. Diesels can run non stop for DAYS which is part of why I want one.... I'm just so familiar with them from boats.

Yeah, short trips aren't really ideal for any car. I just wanted to make sure that diesels weren't radically different in that aspect.

The range is really one of my major likes about them. I can essentially not worry when I head to the less populous regions of CA.

I say spend < $20K on your car and have more money to do other things. Seriously though, do you want a $500 or more/month car payment?

    $30000 @ 3.9% FOR 48 months = $676.03
Assuming you put nothing down and can get 3.9%

I am sure you have ran the numbers being a numbers nerd though.

    jetta diesels ARE ~$20k... Maybe $22ish? But yeah, that's still ~$400/month w/o a dp.

The tdi wagon starts at $24,615.

This isn't going to be an immediate purchase, especially if I'm working in the city. My little civic will do fine for a while with that commute duty. If I take the job with the ~25 mile commute it'll be sooner. I'll definitely have time to save for a DP.

damn, they optioned that sport wagon right to ~$25k didn't they? ****ers.

Jeff, lease a white sport wagon for 3 years. By the time you're done, that'll be right around when we'll need something I hope.

That's kind of what makes the A3 tempting, it's only $5k more...

Dude, diesel adds $3500 premium to the Golf. I assume it's the same for Jetta?
If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done.

um... yeah they do (and they're a bitch to get to). you don't have to plug them in like you did with old IDI diesels. my tdi does 9 miles one way then sits. aside from it not putting out any heat for the first 8 miles, it's fine.

yeah, they've put the tdi into a package with a nice interior and nice tranny now. It USED to be in the stripper interior with only their 5mt... So instead of going after penny pinchers apparently they're going after the prius crowd (nicer efficient instead of cheap)?

wait, wut? You have plugs you have to wait on? Like the light comes on, then goes off, THEN you can start it? The boat doesn't have them at all, but I guess it's a big enough cylinder that the cold isn't an issue? It's sits on ~40º water at times, so they couldn't assume it won't get cold, but maybe that's not cold enough to be an issue? Or is it just more automated in the newer TDIs now but they still have them?
