i saw a couple today as low as $1000. They went quickly before i had a chance to even react.
|
|
Yeah, I'd say they're averaging in the $1200-$1300 range... that's just a seat of the pants guess.
|
|
yeah, $1500 seems like the high end for asking prices, those seem to drop to the range everyone is saying when they sell. ~$1k will go quick, some sellers know this and want to dump them so if you watch and wait you can get lucky.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but DPReview's 5D Mark II review is up...

no surprises there. I skipped to the comparisons and final thoughts, no mention of auto ISO sucking in his CNs? Damn, it's terrible, they MUST have mentioned that somewhere no?

I thought I saw them mention the lack of configurability of auto-iso somewhere. Not sure if that's what you mean.

I wouldn't be too put off by that. It's the same as any non 1 series canon, actually a bit more than the older x0Ds and old 5D. I've shot in light rain a ton with my old 5D w/o issues, plus snow. Downpours no, but rain/wet yep.
the Antarctica issue does bother me a bit though considering is was 6 bodies, but that'd probably an extreme? But still, LL made it sound like the 5Dii was the only body with real issues but also hinted that those bodies had grips (which is still an issue, but if shooting w/o solves it less so).

Ben, I would caution you against saying the 5D Mark II doesn't have any issue since it didn't outright fail on you in wet conditions. Moisture in the cracks of your body can have long-term damage due to rusting, etc. Whether the D700 is better in this regard, I can't say - but there's more than meets the eye here.
|
|
OK, and if the D700 is better then so is the 5D, 40D, 50D, and any other body that didn't fail on that trip..... the better camera will just come down to what you need/want out of a camera, but I can see why people WILL rule out the 5Dii now. Interesting though is the same trip in 2007 had issues with the 1Ds mark II... The very camera a lot of people considering 5Diis end up with. When people make that choice a lot of them cite the sealing as one of the reasons... Was that issue ever resolved? Was it a real issue or just something very odd with these Antarctica trips? And with only canons failing, what are sony and nikon doing differently where they don't have issues yet even canon's 1 series does?
Obviously there's an issue with the 5Dii's sealing. But my feeling is that something on this trip was different as I haven't heard about other issues. I'm pretty damn sure anyone with issues would be bringing them up on other forums if they were there no? I'm not saying there isn't an issue, it's obvious there is, but why so many from such a small sample when there haven't been any other publicized issues? The only other issues I've seen with 5Diis is cameras that were DOA, or dead immediately after the initial use (~20 frames then dead). Those were all chalked up to a bad apple in terms of manufacturing.
and the LL article is very vague. If you want some real info dig into the LL board where they're talking about it.
Also, the D700 is an interesting option for me. I have a few thoughts on it, some positive some negative. It's not a bad camera, it has some very good ideas/concepts on it, but in the end it's not for me. This weather sealing issue DID make me price out a switch again. Probably the third time I've had a cart on B&H loading with a D700 and lenses. But each time I think about it, and reread the reviews of the D700 it just doesn't do it for me for whatever reasons.
$.02
YMMV
Oh, and after reading more about the LL issue, IT'S NOT A GRIP ISSUE like I was previously wondering/hoping. NONE of the 3 posters had grips on, so that's ruled out.Rainbags are a commonality for 3 of the bodies though?

my gf just got a BB card to get her laptop, I offered to pay cash for her laptop so she wouldnt do it, but apparently she wanted the card.
MattMcDole, at one point in time, worked at BB, and he said the cards were nothing but a huge scam that robbed people blindly all the time.
Then again, CC's to tend to target people that are bad with finances..

Just adding that Im loving this camera. Number of keepers has gone up and focus is much more accurate from what ive experienced so far. Ill put it through its paces this weekend but im so glad I waited.

One popped in at B&H and funds came just in time. Absolutely outstanding. Beautiful with primes.

I am having 1 problem with my 5DMk2, when going through the menu or reviewing pics on the LCD screen it will quickly turn off. This is getting annoying.

anyone played with the auto lighting optimizer setting? Ive been noticing my shots tend to be underexposed and having to shoot +.5 or +1 ev. Anyone having similar finds? Default for the auto is set to standard, however I thought it was supposed to OE if anything not under. Just curious, im going to try switching it off and see if it makes a difference.
|
|
what are you shooting that is needs +.5~+1? I'm ALWAYS there at my house, but I do have white walls...But since I shoot RAW I don't give a damn about ALO. It's only "on" if you use DPP or JPEGs so I can't imagine it'd mess with the exposure calcs.

for example the family fisheye shot, was +1 and looks perfect. A bunch of my shots from last weekends shoot needed a bump in LR as well. Just curious if its just me or maybe I need to get used to the way the camera is metering compared to the 40D.
|
|
your walls and carpet are both lighter than 18% gray though no?
and fisheyes ALWAYS meter weird FYI.but usually it's more that they're not tricked as much by the sun in a shot, but yeah, they see so much the meter's not used to it.

Went to a wedding this weekend. Hung out in the balcony to get some UWA shots of the ceremony. I also took my 28-75 and 50 1.4. It was too dark for my 70-300.
I was kinda suprised when the pro's second shooter came up there after the procession. He was shooting a 5D w/ 50 1.4 and 5Dii with 70-300. He also had a 17-40 on the 5Dii for the close ups of enterance/exit. Kinda cool that I owned 2 of his 3 lenses (17-40 is a waste on a crop anyway)
It really made me want a 5Dii. There was no way I could have thought about bringing my 70-300 on the XSi. I was shooting the UWA at 10mm, f/4, ISO 1600, 1/25". I would have been worthless at f/5.6 on the 70-300. Not to mention, I've realized that ISO 1600 on the XSi really needs a fair amount of NN. 800 isn't bad, but damn I'd love a usable ISO 3200.
Homeboy was blasting away great shots (I was chimping a bit over his shoulder, and actually suprised that he didn't use a histograhm) close to 300mm and at least at f/5.6. The IS on that lens can get you ~1/50" easy @ 300mm and with that compression and a dark altar area he was likely shooting at 6400.
I talked to him for a bit at the reception and he raved and raved about the 5Dii.
I really wish I could afford one. I could sell the Sigma and pick up a 17-40 and have a stellar kit.
I'm also thinking my Tamron may need to go in for some adjustments (especially after looking at Shawn's Mexican beer wranglers). But my 50 1.4 really kicked ass at the rehersal dinner where I was the primary shooter (one girl with a entry nikon with the 18-55 + popup flash).
And of course I didn't shoot over the wedding pro's shoulder. He didn't come up there until after my UWAs, during the ceremony I mainly sat back and enjoyed. Took a handfull of shots with my 50 + 28-75 of the key moments, but they sucked. I didn't even take the camera into the reception.
Hopefully I can process most of the other shots tonight and get them up. I took about 1k this weekend.

from what Ive seen, the error 70 appears after liveview/ video functions?
|
|
nope i'm not gripped. i read a person's issue that they got it (Err 70)when shooting slow shutter speeds. thinking back i realized this is the same situation for me, it was happening often on friday when i was at the aquarium. really annoying, camera basically has to reboot to shoot again.
|
|
putting 2 and 2 together, maybe that's an overheating warning (long shutters or video/live)?
Dan, had you shot any video that day?
