Default  The weekly "Whoa" moment with the D700...

Was processing orders this morning when I came across another shot that made me just go "Whoa". This is an ISO 3200 shot, processed in Lightroom 2.2 with NO noise reduction. The exposure is "dead on", meaning no adjustments other than WB have been made (I'll probably pull it down 1/3rd a stop for the print though). Crazy good. I love my D700. I've included the full rez shot for you pixel peepers.

    Awesome! Nice catch!

Soooo wish I had one of these, dance performance/compettition season is coming up and high ISO is the only way I can shoot them.

    damn Sam, that's impressive!

can I ask why that's a whoa moment -vs- your other shots? Don't get me wrong, it's a rad shot, just wonder how it's different -vs- your other D700 images. And I do love this shot.

It's just a reminder of how good the D700 really is at 3200. The image is almost usable without any NR at all. Some light CNR, and you're good to go. It's not the shot itself per se, it's the camera's performance.

That is really good noise performance. I wish my camera even had 3200

Had another one of these moments yesterday, processing a photo for a lady who wanted a 13"x10" print of the following shot. I knew it was from an event with poor lighting where I shot ISO 6400 nearly the entire time, so I was worried I wouldn't be able to produce a high quality print that (relatively) large from it. I was wrong - this just reaffirms getting the D700. This image, again, has no noise reduction applied whatsoever:

    Large Version Here

    ****ing incredible.

Now before some of you call me a hypocrite for the "Just a reminder..." thread, talking about how great all gear right now is so good, and this thread - this is just an example of how photographers who shoot well outside the norm can take advantage of some of the more pro end of things. Not everyone needs this sort of performance - my little side business depends on this kind of performance.

While I would love if all cameras had this level of performance, I'm fine with the GF1 having poor ISO handling. It's a different tool for a different job, and having to NR files or shoot B&W for family photos, etc. isn't that big of a deal to me. With that said, if the GF2 has better noise performance, the GF1 will be hitting the streets.

Why, exactly? I mean, they already have 3 or 4 bodies on the market that can shoot pretty comfortably at ISO 3200, and 6400 is usable (except for the mkIV, where 6400 looks great). Sure it's exciting to go further than that, but if their bodies are only really lagging by one stop, I'm okay with that--it was the other way around for a long time, and eventually the pendulum will swing back.

Nice sam. But I'll admit, the more I shoot with the GF1, the better and better D700 files look. Not to say the GF1 is bad, but the difference IS massive when you look at them back to back.

yeah, they won't, but I agree with Mark, the 5Dii is close enough in terms of noise. It's much less than a full stop different. You can shoot 3200 all day with a 5Dii. The 1Div can go much higher than the D700/D3. That's not to say the D3s isn't winning this battle right now, but what do you really need Saad? The 50D has never been a good high ISO body and you know it. This isn't canon -vs- Nikon really, it's cropper -vs- FF. The MP count plays a much smaller role here than the sensor size does, or really just the pixel size as croppers will always be packed with pixels.

Also, dude, if you're crying about ISOs on canon, at least buy some fast glass before you bitch too much.

In what sense? High ISO performance, no doubt. Low ISO? I don't really see it. The dynamic range is a little worse, but other than that they're far more similar than they are different.

You know, in my couple days playing with the GF1, the biggest issue I run into is not ISOs (although I keep hitting 1600 and not liking it) but the loss of the DOF vs. my cropper. It seems to be a huge difference. I do most (read that pretty much all) of my shooting on my rebel with my 30mm sigma which is pretty damn close to the same comparative focal length as the 20mm on the GF1. The difference at f/1.8 is really, really big. Now, this isn't a huge issue but it has added to my reasons for my next body to be a full frame sensor. If this difference between a cropper and a mft sensor is that great, cropper to full frame should be substantial.

But, that said, none of this outweighs being able to throw the damn camera in my pocket and still love the pictures that come out.

Yep, the DoF differences between all these formats can be surprising. I really like having MFT on one end and FX on the other - it's sort of the perfect setup for me since the stuff I typically shoot with the MFT I don't want really shallow DoF for, and the stuff I shoot with the FX I typically do, or its not problematic.

But keep in mind that the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 on the Rebel is going to be 48mm so beyond the DoF differences you're going to get cleaner backgrounds simply due to compression.

just above 800. But I'm really have to stay close to the lights in my house to keep 800 well lit so I have a bunch of 1600 shots that aren't great. I don't mind the noise in them either, it's the loss of contrast and DR that's more obvious or annoying I should say.

I do wish they made faster primes for it though, that would solve the DOF issues (that's a win/loss though, sometimes I want less DOF, sometimes I love having decent DOF @ 1.7), but it would also solve the ISO issues. a 1.2 or 1.0 lens even would mean 800 would be no issue and the DOF would be that of a 1.4 or 1.8 on FF. I'd pay 2x the price of the 20mm for the speed personally. Not sure if there's a market for that though.

Well, duh. But yeah, it's not just "noise" - it's the loss of color fidelity, etc. That's why a lot of my high ISO stuff ends up being B&W. Again, there's no doubt this is an area where MFT will (and needs to) continually improve. But I'm okay with it as is anyway.

We'll see. I think this is an opportunity for Sigma to really own a market, but we still haven't heard any rumblings that they're even paying attention to this market.

yeah, dynamic B&W FTW. I just wish it was one stop better, that's all. I'm not expecting miracles, but 800 is great, 1600 is bad news. 1250 is OK as well though, so I just wish 1600 was a tad better and I'd be good. The amount of light in my house really wants me at at least 1600 unless I'm right under/near a light. As you said, they'll improve this over time. Backlight the bitch and keep it at 12mp for the next few cycles and I'd be happy (I would have been happy with less MP but we know how that goes).

It will be very interesting to see what they announce on the 18th. If it does end up being the successor to the G1, hopefully that means an introduction of a new sensor, which would likely become the GF2 sensor when it's eventually released. I'm hoping it doesn't end up being the GH1 sensor, which doesn't seem to be any better in terms of noise.

I just got the GH1 in today and have had all of 15 minutes to shoot it side by side with the GF1. At first blush, there is a pretty big difference at high ISO. Hopefully this weekend I will get a chance to shoot some more controlled shots (don't hold your breath though. I'm about an hour from picking up the Newfy from knee surgery number one so my hands may be full).

Cool, post some shots when you can. I've heard the GH1's sensor has more of a propensity towards banding at higher ISOs.
