    Default  The GF1 samples thread...

Between me, Sam, Andy, Tom and everyone else with these things, we should be able to get a good sample thread going right? Post your salesman-esque shots in here guys, I'll start:

eventually I'll get around to doing a proper review of this little sucker, but I'll say it's been a very fun camera to use. It's IQ/size ratio makes it awesome. I've noticed I've been taking even MORE shots of Elias around the house now only because it's so much easier to do so with the GF1.

This was my main reason for the purchase. I didnt see myself walking around with Myles and the D700 for day to day shots.

This is where my one fast nice prime is clutch on a DSLR for me. The 5D/24L combo wasn't too terrible. But yeah, there's really NO excuse to ever be w/o a camera now.

There's just no way I would walk around with a D700/50mm on my hip while carrying Al around. It just didn't happen. The GF1 is compact enough that when it's on my hip I can actually get into the car and belt up without removing it - that's the thing that makes it "go everywhere" for me. If it was weather sealed, it would barely ever come off my hip.

I could see you in the shower with one!

yeah, that's where we differ, I always had a DSLR with me and just dealt with it (which is part of why I'm so critical on bags). But the GF1 has taken it's place anytime I don't need ISOs or where the lens isn't restrictive (and I'll admit, I don't mind the FL much at all, it's a nice medium between 50 and 24). My issue with the GF1 though is I DON'T have an easy carrying solution for it right now other than in a large jacket pocket. That's great in winter, but I need something come spring that will work then.

But since I bought the GF1, what, 4 weeks ago now? I've shot with the D700 at my parents house more to dodge questions ("another new camera?!") than light. I've pulled the D700 out at work as well and landscaped with it. But for ~4 weeks now almost every single shot is with the GF1. I'm shooting more, and more make it through to the blog as well. So that has to mean something. And that's with the one lens restriction as well.

I am so tempted to pick one up for our upcoming hike up Kili. Will wait for a bit before picking one up I think.

AF is all internal, it's focusing is noticeably faster (to me anyway) than the 20mm, and VERY quiet to focus as well. The IS works very well as does the focus limiter to speed up the focusing. Plus, it's light and looks pretty slick with the lens hood. Need to try to use it for more macro and more portrait shots, but so far I'm loving what I'm getting out of it.

Goddang with samples like that why have a D700? Shoot! This might make a slick back up camera vs a 2nd D700 !

But seriously, I can list off a ton of reasons why you'd want a D700 instead of a GF1, but yeah - having both is awesome.

If you're looking for a "backup", I would definitely go for a D300 or D300s. The GF1 is great, but I have no illusions about it covering my ass if the D700 goes South.

Oh for sure another Nikon is a must - Although it looks pretty capable, that's the only 'true' option.

and clean, the s90 trumps the LX3. I'd even go for a G11 over the LX3 personally (having owned the LX3 and currently own a s90).

    2.8?

Sam, the 16-35VR shipped last night, it's here today. The 7-14mm is a rad little lens, don't get me wrong, but I basically used it as a placeholder for the 14-24mm to allow me to sell it to fund the 16-35mm. Now that it's here, provided it's not got any horrid distortion issues (I'm not expecting any) then it's my UWA and the 7-14mm goes. As cool as it is, it's too big for my use with MFT. Basically, my MFT kit will be 2 pancakes. I need a UWA for the D700, so doubling up doesn't make a lot of sense.

This way I had my bases covered and I got to have some first hand experience with the 7-14mm. Had I known the 16-35mm would be in stock already I could have waited but I was figuring Marchish.

yeah, it's certainly not a BAD setup, but I could see the DR being a problem in some situations. I also know I'd get questions about the camera, and as an unestablished guy trying to get started, I don't want to have to deal with that.

Totally understand, Ben - I think we're in the same camp. I think I would be pretty happy with a 14mm f/2.8, 20mm f/1.7 and maybe a 40mm f/1.8 (all AF) setup for how I use the GF1. The only exception I can see to that is if I was going to go on another big vacation, but those don't happen too often.

So I walk up to him and he's eating out of a basket on the rail. He's probably 10 feet from me so I stick the camera over the rail and try to get a lower shot. He turns and looks at me, still chewing. And I swear to you he was getting pissed with each passing shot. Just his eyes. This is the last shot of the series. After which I calmly backed the hell off.
