Interesting test, but note that they're using very different focal lengths and shooting just one sport. One of the nice things about Rob Galbraith's testing is they're shootin a wider range of sports with a wider range of lenses. RG noted that with the longer focal lengths, the Canon appears to have more issues, iirc.

Canon 300mm F2.8 IS lens goes for $4299.00, the Nikon 400mm F2.8 VR is $8999.95.

Yes the focal length was different as was the sensor size as the Nikon was FF and the Canon is 1.3x crop. As far as I could tell this article has nothing to do with RGs test. This is two pro photogs who exclusively shoot Nikon and Canon who are comparing what they shoot now to the new version from Canon and Nikon. Interesting read. Just as RG review was interesting.

    nikon 300mm 2.8 VR $4900
    nikon 1.4 TC $360
    canon 400mm 2.8 IS $7100

the D3s has enough ISO depth to easily use the 1.4 TC if you need 400mm but want to use a 300.
yes, there is still a nikon tax involved, it's just not quite as bad as your numbers show.

it's not like a TC doesn't have an IQ penalty though.

    not enough with those lenses.

canon's and Nikon's TC pair incredibly well with their long lenses. AF still flies, they're sealed, and you'd have a hard time finding any IQ faults with either systems paired with their TCs.

Some impressive shot in this review with a 400mm w/ 1.4X converter shot with the 1DmkIV

Interesting that they find the Canon AF to be better, and then PopPhoto finds the MkIV slower than the MkIII in their tests. So essentially, the 1Div is noticeably slower AF than a D3s and about 1 stop worse in ISO performance. But then you get a crop factor to get some extra zoom out of your lenses, more FPS at full resolution, and more MP for cropping and such.

^ the crop factor is a bit of a double edged sword though... Reach is great some times, but it's also a PITA for others. The specific UWA zooms solved most of that, but for the 1.3 the siggy 12-24mm is the only proper UWA zoom... It's a great lens, I even love it on FF, but a lot of people settle with the 16-35mm but only get a 20mm wide.

I meant the advantage for sports shoots as is the extra MP for leaving room for a crop which would be more important when using a prime. I never thought about the hassle of UWA with a 1.3x crop.
