    Default  Canon to Nikon...

Hello wise NSOP! I might be switching from Canon to Nikon due to the fact the school I might be attending shoots Nikon and it would be a pain in the butt to have to keep "borrowing" theirs if i needed a certain lens. A couple quick questions. One, I know plenty of you have done this, how long does it usually take to sell everything? And two, do you think its really worth it. Regardless, I would need to upgrade if i wanted to keep shooting Canon to like a t2i, 50D or 7D so it would be a compatible camera to what they shoot in Nikon. Thoughts? thanks a ton!

    1. You can probably sell your stuff fairly easily on POTN... keep in mind that it may take a bit to sell entry-level gear because people are usually upgrading, like you.
    2. No, it's not worth it to switch. You will shoot the same unless you do something very specialized. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, or that it won't be more convenient for you, but don't expect it to change your photography at all.

Good to know about POTN, I know it wont have any effect on my photography. The main reason I might switch is that they only shoot nikon and it might be a pain to have to always borrow when i need a lens that i dont have in a canon version or even the flashes/syncs. And I dont want to worrie about someone else already have borrowed the camera and then im crap out of luck you know?... Also i have a 10-20, 55-250is, 50, 18-55, and two 430ex flashes(to give people an idea what i already have and would have to sell)

You'll sell your stuff quick. I enjoyed the switch from Canon to Nikon. It gave me an opportunity to reevaluate my gear and shooting preferences. My work flow is much better with the Nikon and I find the camera easier to use/work with. Now this could be just because I've gotten the chance to start from scratch with my own brand new system.

A D300s or a used D300 wouldn't be a bad option at all. I you wanted to go FF the D700 will cost you a pretty penny but it is a truly fantastic image taking machine.

your kit zooms will be the hard sells because as Mark said others are looking to upgrade... So list them cheap (look them up on KEH and undersell them). Switching isn't bad but there's not much difference out there except for in the FF bodies. Nikon is about speed and canon about MP. I get the same images pretty much. As John said, a D300 or D300s is a great camera, but I'd also look at a D90.
    I own this joint!

Nikon Cafe, you need to sign up to see 90% of the content though. You should also check out the Nikon sections at dpreview & Fred Miranda.

I have the d90 & love it, it is plenty of camera for me at this point. I do have upgrading to a used d300 in the back of my mind though just to try something different.

Sounds like a bit of a no brainer. If they use D90's, go with that. They're not too expensive, image quality is good. It's not quite as flexible and as snappy as a D300, but if you're just learning that probably doesn't matter much.

I have seen the d90 and d300 side by side and even though they have the same sensors, it does seem like the d90 handles higher ISO noise just a tad better.

I would own one if I wanted anything to do with video. I stuck with the d300 because of the creature comforts of it. I like the size and heft. and they are exactly like a d700 on the outside.

Get a d300s, and dont look back. I had a d80, and when I got a D300, I never wanted to use the d80. The d300 has so many functions and is extremely easy to use. The lower nikon models seem to have functions hidden in menus, while the pro-sumer models (d300 & d700) have all the functions easily accessible with a button. The d90 and d300 produce nearly identical pictures (IQ and ISO), but it is the better functions that the D300 has that make it a better camera.

D300 can shot 8 FPS with the batteries with the MB-10, as can the D300s. However, without the battery grip, the D300s is only 7 FPS.

and if you don't want video or SD card the D300 can be had for as low as $850 if you are looking. I love the ergos of the d300 over the D90/D80 series.

Another option is keeping your Canon gear, then buying a used D50 or D70 for about $200 to $300 for school.

You are so not going to give a rats ass about Canon gear once you start shooting with a Nikon..

Get the D300 or D300s, you won't regret it in anyway. You will have more then enough camera to work at a pro level in the future as well. Also you will be that much more of a step ahead of the next kid with a D90..

not exact, the viewfinder is much bigger and better on the D700, but it's more proud which makes it an issue in a pelican case (I'm not comfortable with my D700 in my pelican that my 5D went in perfectly, the viewfinder is just enough taller to make it VERY tight...)

I was referring to the controls and size. The view finder is a little bit different and the housing is a touch more robust.

when i made the change... i sold all my gear on craigslist... i actually made money on pretty much all my lenses. all you have to do is hold out for that "special" buyer who didnt really do their research on prices.

when selling stuff... i always go craigslist first (ill list for a few weeks) because there are no fees/shipping, then POTN with paypal... and finally ebay... basically im trying to avoid fees as much as possible.

What these guys said, go with a D90, its an excellent camera for its price and very capable, the D300 is a better crop sensor camera yes but not so much it makes the D90 a bad choice and you'll save a lot money. Jumping straight to a Nikon FF is probably too much a financial leap for you anyway and limits your choice of lenses.

the grip that you feel with your right had is much more solid and comfortable on the d300(s) than the d90. I would say this, If you want to shoot wildlife or action, get the d300s. If you dont care about any fast paced shooting, then get the d90.

so how do you adjust WB, ISO and Quality on a D90? I see they're mapped to the rear buttons, but rears and what? The only nikon I've ever shot is a D700...

All of that and the fact that it's a little bigger. I didn't care for the left hand scroll wheel at first but when I realized how to use it properly it wasn't bad. Now I don't think I'd like going back to the D90/80/70 version.

If you add the MB-D10 battery grip it all seems to come together nicely.

You have to use the rear buttons which is a pain.

My only grip about the D700 so far is that I wish it had the CF card door latch like the D300 does.

Another thing that has yet to be mentioned is that you get a few more features in the menus on the D300/700. One of the nice things is the AF fine tune and auto ISO (the D90 might have this feature).

I wouldn't hesitate to step down to a D90 over the D300s if I was looking to do video. The price difference could net you a tokina 11-16 or sigma 30/50mm 1.4.

As you can clearly see from the rear view of the D90, when the camera is in shooting mode, the buttons labelled 'WB' 'ISO' 'Quality' on the back by the LCD function the same as the D300/700, you hold a button down and scroll the rear command dial and you'll see the changes on your top mount LCD, or rear info screen if you choose to turn it on. Otherwise they have the alternate functions in playback mode only. I find it pretty straight forward.

yeah, thanks. At first it was the reaction to them not being where they are on my D700. But then I remembered all the button on the back on a D700 are JUST press buttons, not press AND turn, so they combined them. I actually prefer that D90 layout... I wish they had that on the D700, but with C1~C3 on the dial like my 5Dii had. I also prefer the rear LV button, but I'd miss the rear AF button unless the AE lock button can be used, I NEVER use AE lock and ALWAYS use rear AF...

I don't find much of a difference in Canon and Nikon, and if there has to be one selected from the two it would be Nikon al the way. It has got some great cameras embedded with some great features. D90 would be my choice as this is the best one that would serve your purpose. Easy to handle and good features what more would yo be looking in a camera of the likes of Nikon. Hope this was of some help to you.

'tis the season for randomly bumping old threads without checking the last post date.

Well as long as we're here; Nick, since I haven't been "following" you, what did you end up getting, where'd you pick it up and how is it working out?

    D300s w/ 17-50 and 70-300.

As for how it's working he'll have to answer that himself, but he's been posting some rad shots from it.

Thanks Ben! I loooovvveee it!I got the d300s off FM(dude ended up being a WIKED pain in the butt.....), the 17-50 off craigslist and the 70-300 off FM as well. the d300s itself is awesome, great build, easy to use, and is really fun to use. The 17-50 2.8 is also a great lens, super sharp and pretty light. The 70-300 VR kicks ass, the VR is awesome! Overall, loving the new set up. Check out my flickr if you want to see some of my recent shots with it.

while the old thread is bumped...what's weird about it? I think it might be misunderstanding of what it does. Press the button with forefinger and scroll with the thumb through AF options (AF-S/A/C).

D90 compared to D300 has dedicated live view button and frustrating manual focus video. Not that this is an issue with the new "s".
