Okay you lot. I hate to be that guy (not really, but it's the polite way to open up) but I'm going to stir the pot a little despite that I'm a complete NOOB here and have contributed very minimally.
Turnout on this is ****. The way I see it, the one submission rule is killing it. Rather than see submissions early on, get inspired to shoot more then submit more, people are dilly dallying the month away until they come up with jack squat. I love a challenge, but would love some inspiration and the feeling that more than three people will give a crap.
Check out the latest Challenge on TGR. 81 votes, on a ski forum! 27 submissions! Pros and jong amateurs alike.

Although I can see your frustration on the number of people submitting, I disagree on the number of pics eligible for submission. One pic is suffice. You need to understand that NSOP is still a relatively small/medium forum and that not every member visits daily. And on top of that a lot of us our just busy. There was a baby boom where it seems like everybody and their mamma was having a baby all in the same span of a few months. Then there was a few of us changing jobs, being laid off, etc. And well, frankly some people may be intimidated by the lack of skills and might have the attitude "well, I'm not going to win so why bother."

    Just a thought...

But for YOU I'll try to make more of an effort to submit.

Hmm... It looks like the TGR forums have a little over 27,000 members. I believe NSOP just broke 1K.

Considering their membership is 27 times ours, let's look at this.

    Entries per member:
    TGR: 27 submissions / 27000 members = 1 entry per 1000 members
    NSOP: 9 submissions /1000 members = 9 entries per 1000 members

    Votes per member:
    TGR: 81 votes / 27000 members = 3 votes per 1000 members
    NSOP: 9 votes / 1000 members = 9 votes per 1000 members

When I was participating in the challenges, I would take challenge shots during the month, and then select my favorite/best to post near the end of the month. I'm sorry, but it's the 8th--give people some time. Also note that I said when I WAS participating in the challenges. Once it got down to 3 or 4 entries and 9 people voting on a consistent basis, I turned to a) my full-time job that pays me, and b) my photographic opportunities that pay me. I'm not making excuses--but there's very little motivation to participate when nobody really pays attention and you've got a lot of other more pressing things on your plate.

It's kind of the way it is, and no I'm not sorry about it.

If you're so frustrated, why don't YOU do something to change it?

just realized this was shot in may and is therefore not eligible for the contest...bummer. at any rate, it's a pool at Yellowstone National Park. The color comes from the algae living within the pool.

Not sure on the etiquette for this...should I take the shot down from this thread or just mark it as not eligible and leave it?

Also, less than 7 days left for entries! Keep 'em coming!

I never get in on the contests because I can't ever find the theme posted until the end of the month(or the next month after voting is finished and everything). This is the first time I found one before it was up(four days left). Now I see it was posted at the end of last month, and I haven't been on in a while, so that explains that. But I've been trying to enter since November and I just now found the theme for the current month.. I'm not sure how I'm missing these..

Far as I can figure, since you're only allowed one entry, people wait until the end of the month for their best possible picture to materialize. But since everyone is doing this, the thread sits dormant and never shows up under New Forum Posts on the main page. So nobody sees it and nobody thinks about it.
Even then if you check in you see squat, which I suppose makes it hard for anybody to get motivated to contribute.
But the times they are a changing. Post up what you've got! There's plenty of variety on here now to seed some creative thinking.

I think it's up to the photographer... I would just keep in mind that the winner is deckided by a vote, so if someone doesn't think (group)your photo best fits the theme, they won't vote for it.

I voted for Kilonad because I think he came the closest to the truest sense of Abstract. First you say "WTF?". Then you say "nice shot". Finally you say, "I'd hang that on the wall".
