let me dig through my archived work files from the old job at home. I had some javascripts that worked decently. may be able to find updated versions now even.

is java a good alternative? IE will it run on an iPhone? Or, if someone doesn't have flash, will they also not have java? I'm just looking for the most basic option out there w/o making it look like crap.
I suppose I could learn to code the page to check. If you have flash you get the slideshow. If not you get sent to a page with a simple HTML gallery.....

Check out Lightbox 2 - based on the Prototype JS library, iirc.

And no, Java doesn't work on iPhones.

sorry, that's what I'm using now as my backup, but when you load a page and it's just a bunch of thumbs, I don't really love that look. And honestly, I'm using slimbox. Same thing basically, but I'm sure someone will bust me on it.
here's an example, here's the flash page:
http://benjacobsenphoto.com/gallery/scapes/
at the bottom of that there's a text link that takes you to the lightbox version, but here's that link as well:

Why don't you just set it up differently so that it loads the first image when it comes up?
|
|
can you do that with lightbox?

I don't see why not. You may have to hack up triggering the click event for the first slide or something, but should be pretty straightforward.
|
|
yeah, but even then it grays out the screen... I'd love to have it pop up big in a bound area I can set with the thumbs under and the ability to click next like you can normally....

I'd have to dive into it more to give you more advice, but my recollection was that it was pretty configurable.
|
|
I've also been looking for a good slideshow option... I don't think Lightbox is it for a "slideshow" (although it does work well to display a gallery). Definitely post up any good solutions you come up with!

I just found a Java slideshow option... I have not tried it yet, but I plan to implement this into one of my sites within the next few days. Basically, you go to the website below and configure it, then copy and paste the code into your page. It's free, but donations are encouraged. If it works well, I'll definitely consider donating.

Here is a site that uses this slideshow (main image at top of page): http://nowthisiscolorado.com/

I just checked your site, nice work! Yes, this looks like it is very easy to work with, I'm stoked that I found it!
|

whoa, this is rad!!! I just need to figure out how to make it search a folder so I don't have to re-do it each time I add pics....

Check this out, an old gallery of mine. Heck when I was shooting Nikon. Was done in Photoshop.

I've use the Photoshop Galleries quite a bit, they are easy to customize and way faster than building the HTML pages by hand. There is an option on a few of the "styles" to have the page refresh every few seconds, so you can create non-Flash slideshows with the File > Automate > Web photo gallery...
My issue with the Photoshop option is that the pages can be very slow to load once you get a lot of photos in there.
|
|
That jQuery option looks like it has more options for customization (transitions, etc.), but it's not as easy to set up as the Barelyfitz slideshow above. Still, I might have to give it a try.
Just for comparison, here are a couple of examples:
Barelyfitz slideshow: http://mycoloradopics.com/PGS/home.htm <- Random order, uses Javascript
Photoshop Gallery with slideshow: http://mycoloradopics.com/PGS/DEMO <- uses iframes

I just haven't had ANY time to look into these, but I'll get it sorted for sure. A few WP themes I've been playing with also have no flash options. They use it for posts but they're using text AND images...![]()

I just don't understand why you would want to do something non-flash when the larger percentage of people will be visiting your site with Flash capable devices?
If anything you should have a non-flash website option for other folks but not do away with it.
|
|
exactly. If I can make it work w/o flash I'm going to. IE also a small slice of the pie, but I'm fixing my theme for them as well.
this is for the site I want this for:
1. Firefox 2,275 54.09%
2. Safari 689 16.38%
3. Chrome 645 15.34%
4. Internet Explorer 524 12.46%
5. Opera 53 1.26%
6. Mozilla 9 0.21%
7. Camino 4 0.10%
8. Mozilla Compatible Agent 3 0.07%
9. IE with Chrome Frame 2 0.05%
10. (not set) 1 0.02%
not sure how much of the safari spec is iPhone, but all the iPhone users are in that group... Fixing that is a bigger issue than my IE issues potentially.

and with the iPad on it's way, a lot of developers are already changing site design to accommodate that.
Until Steve Jobs decides he is friends with Adobe again and stops hating Flash, the world will bend to his will, the way people did to Bill Gates & IE for the longest while, until they finally decided the next iteration of IE will conform to W3C standards rather than their own.
Ben - if you look at your traffic history, you can look at screen resolution and get a good idea for iPhone/smartphone visitors.

Just don't see any non-flash slideshows out there as clean as flash ones. When I redo my site I'm simply going to have a flash version and then a non-flash version. Well now that I've jumped on the bandwagon too and ordered my first Apple product ever
MSIE 7608 39.9 %
FIREFOX 6987 36.7 %
NETSCAPE 2 0 %
Others 4430 23.2 %
Google Chrome No 2172 11.4 %
Safari No 1803 9.4 %
Mozilla No 312 1.6 %
Opera No 103 0.5 %
Unknown ? 37 0.1 %
Curl Yes 2 0 %
Lynx No 1 0 %

That Nivo is pretty slick and works on my iPad. So seems like I don't have to ask Ben anymore why he wants to use a non-flash slideshow now
I am liking this and more than likely going to use it for my new site. Tested on my iPad and it does work- http://www.dolem.com/lytebox/
