Scanning old prints

My pup passed on this week and I'm planning to make a photo book for him.
I'm looking for my best options to scan a bunch of prints from old albums and it probably won't happen if I go looking for negatives.
I figure my options are:
1. Use the incredibly cheap scanner that came with my $99 HP print/copy/scanner
2. Use the scanner at Kinkos (FedEx Office). It's something like $10. for how ever many you can fit on a DVD. I haven't checked the quality/dpi of their scanner yet.
3. Use some local outfit that probably tailors more to pro photogs and restoration for high dollar.
4. Something like ScanCafe. They just use a 600dpi scanner and they take 1-2 months.
5. Buy the scanner Scan Cafe uses for a couple hundred bucks.
I'm probably not going to go the couple hundred bucks route because: I'm kind of cheap, I'll never use it again, I'd rather spend the money on a nicer book with more pages, I just spent a lot of money on medical bills for the guy and I'm quite literally living on credit cards now.
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

try the scanner you have first, if that sucks, try kinkos. If that still sucks, THEN look at sending them out or buying a better scanner.
FYI ~2 years ago now I bought a scanner for <$150 that does prints and negatives from B&H. They have better options for the same money or similar options for less now... I'd go that route if your existing scanner or kinko's doesn't work out for you.
I own this joint!

yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift, that's why it's called the present.

If you use Scancafe, you can get a discount at www.goingpro2010.com I think, they're a sponsor there.
My parents have good luck from their scanner for stuff like this.

I'm trying the scanner at Kinkos. Not sure if I'm going to like the result, but it's less commitment on the front end. I'm a little hesitant to send them all off, because I have this notion that I can't wait two months to get them back. In reality, this project will probably wrap up around the new year with my track record! I'll post up results if I ever figure out my ****!
