    Default  Kata Dream Bag Challenge!!!

    OMG!!!!

    http://www.dreambagchallenge.com/
KATA invite you to design your
dream photo bag and submit it to the challenge.
Each bag will be reviewed by a professional
panel of judges. The best design will be
selected as the winner, hand built exclusively
for the designer and packed full of
    high-end photo equipment:
    Canon 5D mk II body
    2 Canon Lenses (24-105 EF L IS USM & 70-200 F/4.0 USM)
    Gitzo Traveler kit (tripod+ head)
    Litepanels MICROPRO

Isn't that a dream come true?!
(maybe this goes in news, but it IS a contest)

I'm stoked to see if they'll like my design. My only issue is I have 2 ideas I'd love to see implemented... Maybe Nikki can submit the other one?

it's open until March, so there's plenty of time to work on ideas.

I can't watch the video. Same room as my boss.

I can WATCH it, just not listen.

Giving it some time, I think I can come up with a good design. I would like to make a separate backpack and walk around bag though.

Nothing. These contests are great for companies because it gives them a clear view (with pictures!) of what they need to improve upon. Really smart stuff.

Yeah, instead of hiring a few extra designers at something like $50k/year each (which would really cost them $100k a year after overhead), they just hold a contest with a $5-10k prize attached to it, and rake in all the designs.

I'm not a big fan of this practice, since it means that potentially fewer jobs are created (although I guess someone has to go through all those designs), and the company gets a ton of ideas for free, at the same time it benefits everyone if they make a better bag because of it.

The problem is, one man's dream bag is another man's nightmare. I can think of different dream bags for when I go hiking, when I'm out wandering in a city, when I'm flying somewhere, or when I just want to have everything in one bag at the same time. On the other hand, writing that down just gave me an idea for a bag system, not a single bag.

Also, holy **** some of these people can draw ridiculously well. I'd never have a chance!

On the other hand, while I see a bunch of the concepts that I had in mind, very few of these bags are drawn to a high level of detail - there isn't much about what's on the inside of pockets/pouches, how the inside divider system works, etc. Often times, it's those details that make all the difference in the world. Imagine having CF and SD pouches right on your shoulder straps or on a waist belt. Stuff like that.

I would strongly advise anyone who plans on developing their own design to sketch out whatever you want first, then take a look at the previously submitted designs for finishing touches. It looks like someone's already suggested my card pouch idea (no surprise there, honestly).

a looooooooooooot of the submissions I've gone through seem VERY similar to existing bags (either Kata's or someone else's). But the details some of these guys get in there are awesome, here are two I like in terms of the drawings/details (but not the bag ideas, the first is a stealth reporter no?):
    http://www.kata-bags.com/kataDBC/roo...reetRoamer.jpg
    http://www.kata-bags.com/kataDBC/roo...8/interior.jpg

    then an interesting backpack:
    http://www.kata-bags.com/kataDBC/roo...a%20adroit.jpg

after going through over half of what's there though, I see some ideas worth stealing and I KNOW I'll have issues drawing half as well as some, but I still don't see anything groundbreakingly awesome there...

Hmm. That adroit is actually pretty close to what I had in mind (I was going to have something where the camera compartment could come off and serve as a small shoulder bag too). The water bottle pouch is a nice touch.

I liked the idea with detachable parts as well. I need to think it though.

Ben - did you go any further than the first page? Anything else good?

I love my LowePro bag, but one thing I would change about it would be thinner dividers on the inside. The adjustable foam dividers have got to be half an inch thick at least. I'll live with it for dividing the big areas (camera vs. lenses, etc), but having each little divider be 1/2"-3/4" thick wastes so much bag space.

yeah, I actually did the option where they were all on one page, there's a bunch of well done submissions, but nothing I see that's amazing in terms of the design.

it's more like the think tank 360 where part of the bag swings around on the waist belt so you have access w/o removing the pack.

    so fingers crossed

yeah they are Ranked (far as I can tell its by how many stars you get + how many votes)

like #1 has something like 200 votes and 4 stars

when you click on dream bag gallery you can sort by (Ranking) or (Most viewed)

    SiuHou Chong

you can search it on the gallery...no way to direct link it

and its not in order cause if you search by oldest their are plenty with only 1 or 2 stars (but 50 votes)

the "Trunk" design is awesome, and is using something I was trying to come up with. An easy way to access from both sides and the top and back.

Yeah some really good ideas on their.

I don't think I will win but I want to atleast rank in the top 50 (so far out of 315 + submissions)

but I think its Ranking + the site judges...so who knows maybe just being in the rankings of the popularity contest will be enough to get thier attention.

for my description I almost put

I designed this bag because I currently shoot with a Sony Alpha 100 and a bunch of minolta dinosaur lenses...and would really like to step up my gear game because its what all the cool people are doing on my favorite photography forum....infact just send me the bag back full of money.

Alchemy-z, that's pretty close to the design I had in my head since I saw the competition, nice!

I've noticed there's a flaw in their design gallery; you can't actually sort by highest rating. Sorting by "rating" only puts the designs with the most ratings first.

Is that all there is too it? It shows nothing about the inside layout, the capacity or anything other than a couple of flimsy clips so you can mix and match your handbag with your dress. I thought it was a serious competition?

that winning bag might be really cool actually. It's a sling backpack and shoulder bag hybrid and it also accordions to accommodate more gear. I was playing with BOTH of those ideas. It also looks like it might have a side access panel to it as well, which if that's true this could actually be exactly what I'm looking for...

And I never ended up entering. I don't regret it now either looking at the winners. When we were originally looking at this, most of the entries were mickey mouse and drawn. All the winners were presented VERY well which obviously effected the judging.
    I own this joint!
    gear list.
yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift, that's why it's called the present.
