    Icon Question  Help?

    Ohai everybody.
Since I'm a senior, I figured it's time to check out some colleges.
Just wanted to see everyone's opinion on a couple photos and see if you guys think if they're good enough to get a college's attention or if I need some pointers.
    All opinions welcome!
    Thanks in advance (:

Not sure what a college would look for, but these are some interesting shots.

Did you number them all Efffed up for artistic affect too? That'll definitely get their attention.
I like what I think are numbers 1,6 and 8.
I think if you tweak the PP on number 4 (the one with the bee) it can be pretty dope.
    Good luck with the applications.

OK guys so this is my cousin... She has ambitions of prof. photography, and is looking into colleges who offer photography majors. In order to get into those schools, they like to see portfolios of work.

She was asking her friends on facebook which ones she should include, and I recommended she ask some of you as I know we have pros here, and some very gifted hobbyists as well.

Car- can you link them to some albums of your work?

NSOPers- Car would appreciate any bits of advice regarding getting into colleges for photog, or getting into the biz overall.

You have some nice color/texture studies on your Deviantart... based on what I looked through over there, I think you have better, more representative work than what you've shown us here. I would pick examples, but I have to leave for work in about 5 minutes, and wanted to go ahead and say something in this thread before I left--hopefully I will remember/have time to come back to it in more detail.

I don't know what colleges are looking for specifically for photography (a LOT of us are self-taught), but I would imagine something that's defining (of you) and something that is thematically consistent would help. The images you've put up seem sort of randomly cobbled together, and I would think that you need something more cohesive. If they are going to be very different images, they should display the breadth and depth of your photographic abilities. However, what you'll find as you continue to shoot--and sometimes it's helpful to think along these lines when you're shooting--is that your photography will start to specialize a bit and you will start to focus on certain themes or motifs.

For example, I have sort of settled into focusing on natural light portraits, and urban/rural decay/rural landscapes. I shoot other things, too, but that's sort of the core of how I shoot, and any portfolio that I"d submit would reflect that. However, portfolios can be tailored for wherever you're submitting--if I were submitting a portfolio to a portrait and wedding studio, for example, I would leave out my urban/rural decay, unless they also did some editorial work, or did a lot of "atmospheric" portraits, and I wanted to show that I could do that, as well.

I hope that is helpful, and I do want to come back and actually link to some images that I liked.

Thank you for taking the time and looking and replying on here.
I really appreciate it and I do hope you come back and pick out a few favorites.
I do understand that my portfolio needs to be more "united" but I want to show the diversity I have and not give the same style over and over again and make them think that that is the only thing I am capable of doing.
I do tend to focus more on nature because it's all around and is easy to access, but I tend to drift toward the abandoned buildings and such when I have the ability to get there and actually explore.

for photo schools I would go with not 6 and not 8.
what schools are you looking at? Do you want an art specific school that has a photo option, or is any old school with a photo degree good enough? I'd HIGHLY recommend looking into a business degree to go with the photo degree or possibly journalism. Most photo jobs go off portfolios over degrees anyway, so having a secondary degree that helps you get the jobs your after will help you a LOT.

Pratt and Parsons are schools that I really want to go to, but are way out of my parent's budget.
I've also been looking at Hampshire, a small school in MA, and also Montclair State and William Paterson (my photography teacher in my school went there), and yeah.
I was going to minor in fashion, but I'm not so sure anymore.
