    Default  $3 Reflector

My $3 reflector: $1 20x30 foam board; $1 1/4" bolt; $1 1/4" wingnut; also needed aluminum foil, tape, old tripod.

It can work on the al foil or white side.

It mounts to my old tripod and is very easy to position where you want it. You don't even need an assistant!!! It works great outside or to fill from the opposite side of umbrella flash. The only thing it cannot do is point down (hits tripod column), but it could with a spacer.

I made something similar with the cardboard which comes on wheels when you buy them from tire rack. You can put gold foil on the other side.

Make another, but this time crumple up the aluminum foil first, then flatten it out again, but not all the way - retain a bit of the "texture". This will make the reflection a little less mirror-like.

How would that help? I know it will diffuse the light more, but I wonder if it'll lose intensity.

Actually half of the first attempt was very crumpled, but I cut that panel off and re-did it

Right, it just changes the quality of the light so it's not as much of a reflection, which can sometimes be a bit harsh. Play around with a bunch of different techniques on a subject and get a feel for the differences for yourself.

Good job, many pros make reflectors out of foam core just like this. they work very well in the studio and often times they need cutting to the perfect shape to make a photo work
