Having it on your hip is the thing, IMO. Throwing it in a pocket is great if the weather's bad or I just want to be a bit more stealth, but as you said it takes longer to get to it.

The Spider Holster looks nice for a couple reasons:
    • It has a deeper "slot" that the pin goes into, so it's less likely to pop out than my holster, where the pocket is pretty shallow.
    • It has a two-position switch on it so that the slot operates either freely, or will "lock" each time you put the camera in it. So, if you're in a situation where you're not accessing the camera a lot, put it in lock position. Just not sure how long it takes to "unlock" it, if you can do it one-handed, etc.
    • You can use it in a mode where it has to thread through a belt, for even more protection.
    • The "spider pin" itself is pretty small - much smaller than the ball I use now.

Will let you guys know how it turns out.

yes, that I do, but it's big enough for a D700 w/2 zooms, so it's a bit overkill for the GF1...

    I'm thinking something like these:
Radio Chest Harnesses, Holsters, Communications Packs | For Pros in Rescue, Fire & Rope Access
    Radio/Cell Phone Chest Packs
    Pro Radio Chest Pack

which I'd wear UNDER my current shell. The main zipper is much faster and it'd keep the camera warmer anyway...

agreed, but for skiing I'm always near snow/water, and the lift issue makes me a bit nervous about the hip location. I'm also VERY comfortable with chest mounts now after having the CC for a while now.

Sam, have you considered the CottonCarrier? It seems like it's got the better part for the camera, but it's bracket/holster isn't quite as nice. The spider's camera bit is very weird/big/awkward, but their holster seems a bit easier to use with anything? CC now sells JUST their belt portion BTW:
    http://buy.cottoncarrier.com/product_p/500cch.htm $60 for ungripped
    http://buy.cottoncarrier.com/product_p/555cha.htm $70 for gripped

I'm only going to use the holster itself, not the part that attaches to the camera. The Cotton Carrier stuff is too bulky for what I want to use it for, and doesn't seem any more secure than what I have already.

how will it work w/o the camera part?
yes the CC is quite bulky, which sucks because the plastic part (the only park you really need) is not that big at all. I'd love to see them come out with JUST the plastic bit with 2 "lugs" for webbing or a belt someday... the way the CC works is you can only remove the camera at 2 angles (so say noon and 6 on a clock). You screw the button on the camera with an arrow pointing that direction. Just make sure you set it so it's NOT lined up with the way the camera's weight makes it sit and you're golden. The only way it can come out is if you were to rotate it to that angle somehow which isn't very likely "accidentally". One person has said it's happened so far, they were climbing something awkwardly THEN squatted down, their own leg rotated the camera.

The holster comes with a "spider pin", which is just a 1/4-20 threaded pin. You can screw that directly into a tripod mount, another bracket, etc. So, it will go into my custom bracket.

gotcha. Yeah, the one thing I don't like with their pin (and the CC but to a lesser extent) is you can't set the camera down level/flat with it in place.

hm.. in regards to the CC camera mount, it almost seems like we could do the same thing with a rectangle piece on the bottom of the camera guided into a circular belt holder.. hard to explain but I'll give it some thought / trial and will post if it works.

Spider Holster just arrived. This thing is a beast. It's a half a pound and is very thick. The two position switch is a good idea, but the tension on the lock (which is designed to be easy to release) is loose enough that I'd be scared of it getting accidentally released. But realistically, the channel is so deep I would imagine you could run around without it engaged and it would still be okay. Looks like a quality product.

There's no way I'd use it with the GF1 since the camera-side mount is so big that it wouldn't really be able to be positioned in the orientation I like holding my camera at my side.

yeah, agreed, but compare it to the CC for the money.... The plastic would make me nervous though.
I need/want something though. The more I use the GF1 the more I love it, but the more I hate having it IN a pocket. I'm considering a belt caribeaner with my wrist strap and just tossing on a LCD screen protector.

I LOVE my CC and really want something similar for the GF1. I have my answer coming tomorrow, but it's more for skiing where something like your holster is ideal for normal usage.

Tom's working on the 2nd prototype. Hopefully we can get things wrapped up and a run out before his wife pops at the end of the month, but needless to say he's got a lot of stuff going on. I'd actually like your input on it, so I'll see if Tom will let me share with you what we have already.

I had seven 1inch by 2.5 foot cylinders sent to me in a 2 foot by 2 foot by 1.5 foot box. I am sure that's the only box that they had to fit those cylinders, but damn it was excessive.

Threw this up on DPReview since someone was asking about it, so I figured I'd throw it up here:

This setup is not bad really, but it's damned near impossible to get the camera out and in shooting position one-handed when the holster is locked and it's very awkward putting the camera down anywhere.
