I used some stuff I had laying around to make a flash bracket like this one:

It really helps in portrait orientation, because the flash head is much closer to the axis

Here it is mounted to my camera (sorry the ETTL cord in in the way) to show the orientation. This was bounced only to show how it works, this orientation is more geared toward direct flash



it does cast a slight right to left shadown in landscape, and a left to right in portrait.
