The whole thing fits in a Pelican 1050.

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

I'm going to have to look into building this once I finally buy strobes, whenever that ends up happening (probably once they release the Einsteins).

Wow that looks great, but to save about $100 and 16.5lbs in your gear bag only to double your recycle time and divide your flash total by 6 doesn't make much sense to me.

I'd also throw out the fact that most of us run with a $100/hr tag on our labor, and assembly of this thing puts you right at the price of VB2.

I really do love it, especially the part where you can throw in extra battery packs if one dies on the road, but again, 5x $50-70/pack (to equal one VB2 shot count; yet, still with slower recycle) seems to point to the fact that we should be truly applauding the VB2.

    I kinda forgot the Vagabond is spec'd to do 600 full-power pops from a B1600, or 1200 from a B800. This guy's unit only does 172 from a B800.

However, there are times where you really don't want to carry that extra 16.5lbs around, especially if you're working alone, don't have a lot of time to make extra trips to the car, and don't need more than 150 full power pops in one session. But that's when you turn to something small and light like the Ranger Quadra.

For a pro, this would make no sense. But for a penny-pinching hobbyist? It just might.

Yea, there are trade-offs here, and if you're a true hobbyist sometimes just the sense of accomplishment is worth the extra effort.

Definitely would build one myself it the cost was cheaper, but this is again one of those situations where volume buys and what not pushed the vagabond's price low enough to make it the more sensible purchase.

Probably an obvious question, but if you put four 1.5V 2000mAh cells in series, you end up with a 6V 2000mAh battery, right?

I'm thinking that one of those $50 6V 10Ah batteries could be adapted to serve as a big battery pack for speedlights, and would be like having 5 sets of eneloops (or 4 sets of regular NiMH AAs). You could shoot all day at full power and never have to worry about running out of juice.
