So google came out with an app in beta that lets your design your own app for android without needing to know java or c++ code. I signed up (waiting) but I think my first app will be a multi stop exposure calculator. Win!
Any suggestions on what it should have?

had some wacko results recently.
15min exposure, look at the odd ball "noise?" I got

not the ring, Im used to that with looong exposures and this set up.

Maybe the sensor got hot? Was this taken after a few others?

The weird circle stuff... I'm not sure about that.

Canon Rebel XSi at 100 iso, now that you mention it, it WAS after a series of other shots....how strange. Never new I could over heat the sensor.
Please tell me I didn't damage it? I've shot with that body since then and she seems fine.

yeah, it shouldn't do any permanent damage as long as you don't continually do it. you might want to just take an umbrella and put it over your camera so it's not getting hot from the sun as well adding to the heat the sensor is creating from working for so long. My T2i has a warning for when the image sensor is getting too hot. It will actually tell you on the screen and make you wait until it cools down. It took me almost an hour of constant recording HD video to get it that hot though. You could even feel the heat on the outside of the camera. I ended up taking the battery out and also the lens off and let it sit for a bit in a quiet room to cool down.
Also that ring you get could be from your view finder. cover that up when do long exposures. there was another thread on here not too long ago about this and it ended up being the light that was coming in from the viewfinder that was causing the weird light on the images.
|
|
so does the D700.
as for the noise, that's long exposure noise. You'll have a setting in the camera where it can "reduce" it, but what it does is take another equally long shot and subtract out the spots that are the same. It works, but with a 15 minute shot, you're stuck waiting another 15 minutes before you can shoot again. Pentax and a few other new bodies let you shoot while it's doing this, but canon doesn't...

Just constructed mine.. I had an 82mm Coking ring adapter knockoff from fleabay that I glued to a piece of black foam, then glued that to the welding glass. I'm going camping today for a few days, should be a good time to test it out. Figured for less than $10 (for foam, glass, and adapter ring) I would just try the krazy glue securing method. I also know I have minor vignetting with the 82mm ring adapter, but figured I can just dremel it down a bit if it is an issue..
I'll post some shots up with it next week most likely.

So after reading this thread numerous times I'm finally caving in and making one for myselfI just ordered a Lee 77mm adapter ring from 2filters (it was about $2 cheaper than the Cokin and looks the same) and I'll be making a trip to Lowes tonight for the welding glass. Can't wait to try this out.
|
|
If lowes doesn't have it check at your locl Harbor Freight or Northern Tool.
Actually if you get Northern Tool Mailers you can get it free with their new $5 off any $5 purchase coupons.
Here are 2 more for the flock:

Awesome shots. "Local Harbor Freight"? I thought that was a strictly mail order company? Anyways, I just picked up the glass from Lowes tonight... they had 2 in stock but one was cracked in half, it cost $4.98. Unfortunately I got an email today from 2filters.com saying the holder I ordered is on backorder (so why don't they say that on the site before I place my order? ugghh), so looks like I'll just do the backward lens hood and rubberband technique for a while. Hoping to get out and give it a try tomorrow.

I wonder if that can be fixed using an expodisc? maybe put the disc on the lens then the filter in front while pointing at the light source? If not I'll just fix it in LR. I didn't have much of anything to shoot since there wasn't a cloud in the sky, I tried shooting the pool water moving but it was kind of boring (and I was hot) so I decided I'll wait and try again at a better location.

yeah, use anything white basically. Coffee filters do the trick as well.![]()

Small bump.
Stopped at Harbor Freight today and picked up #66179 Replacement Welding Lens. Sign said $3.99. When I got to the counter, it rang up at $0.87! They said it was clearance and I didn't argue.
YMMV.

Mine must be way darker than these. I metered at 1/30 so that should have been 30 seconds right? I did 6 minutes without blowing anything out. Mid-day lots of clouds and f18.

I'll try post samples tonight. I got home at 0200 this morning and had to be at work at 0730 so no time other than to take a quick peak at the RAWS before heading to work.

I am in love with this idea. Heading to Lowes tomorrow to pick up some stuff. ma going to look for the welding glass.

here is a quick color correction I did because someone wanted to see the before/after. i'm not fond of it nor is it a finished product by any means but it does kind of show what kind of information raw files have.

I tried a custom WB earlier before hitting the location but it must have been off a bit. As it is the "tint" part in the WB was maxed out to the right (purple) and I desaturated the greens a bit but not til after I saw your comment did I realize there was another area I could adjust that color cast... so now I went back and into the camera control area of lightroom and adjusted the green in there as well, here's the adjusted version:

@ N.Lindstrom about your sharing post (w/ the cheapo 10 stop) What time of day and f/stop were those taken at? I can't seem to get the long exposure times from the DIY 10 stop as you are. I can Only go something like maybe 20 or 30 seconds anything longer and it gets blown out.
Also where do you get Fun Foam at? and do you recommend a certain size adapter ring for the use with a 77mm lens?
|
|
I shoot either f11 or f16, once and a while at f22 depending on how much cloud coverage there is. I just guess with times, usually around 7 or 8 minutes works, but I've done enough to be able to adjust my guess accordingly. If you can do the math, that's great too, but I just wing it. Here are a couple examples:
Mostly clear afternoon
f16, ~8.5 minutes
Almost completely overcast
f16, 8 minutes
Here's similar set up shot to get an idea for coverage
Almost completely overcast, good strong winds
f16, only 2 minutes I guess
To answer other questions,
I just had a Cokin ring I accidentally ordered instead of a Lee. I would think any ring would word as long as there is enough room for clamping, and has the same thread size as the lens you are using of course.
The foam was just a precaution for light leakage; I've done it without and am not sure it makes much of a difference. I got it at Michaels, although I bet you can get it anywhere that has a craft section.
Something else that needs to be done is to cover your viewfinder, otherwise light will get in that way and ruin your image. Mine tend to turn a really weird blue as well as being almost blown out. Thomps6s was getting crazy lines, almost like scratches.
One thing I never do is shoot with the sun in the frame, that could be causing some of your problems. It's more difficult, but not impossible to shoot on really sunny days.
This was 3PM on a summer day,
f22, around 8 minutes
I dunno, it's all been guessing for me. Posting some examples of what you're coming up with might help in a diagnosis....
