so I started playing with my 18-55 IS reversed. Its nice having a zoom adjustable macro, I just set it on MF and turn the whole lens for focus adjustments.

I think this was around 24mm. 18mm is much closer (GOD almost fills the frame), but DOF is so hard to work with even at f/16.

jjswee, I've learned that you really need sun light (outside or window) to be able to see. I also draped a piece of white paper over my flash to direct the light more down.

so what, just flip the lens around off the body and shoot without the lens unattached to the camera, just held up to the body.? Will the camera even fire with the lens off the body?

Yeah it will fire. You can only shoot at wide open tho. I was just holding my lens to my camera. you probably dont want to do it alot just because of dust. But Im pretty sure it doesnt mess with the camera considering you can buy reverse mounts.

Im gonna get one off ebay here next week, threads into the end of your lens and uses the proper mounts to connect it to your camera

    1) Set your camera to Aperture Priority mode (AV)
    2) Set your lens to MF & Infinity
    3) Set desired aperture (I suggest f/8-16 to start. REMEMBER, your DOF is going to be extremely thin once the lens is flipped to macro, but a high # also means it will be harder to see your subject without adequate lighting)
    4) Press and hold the DOF Preview button (on Canon its the small button on the bottom left (behind) of the camera near the larger button to release the lens from the mount). You should be able to see the aperture blades inside the lens.
    5) While holding DOF Preview, unmount the lens.
    6) Reverse lens (mount with a mount, or hold carefully)
    7) Move the camera until you get focus
    8) Take photo

    That's some tight stuff there...

no really it is tight, you can almost draw a line across the screen for the DOF.

Well although its not a Reversed lens, those extention tubes will get you pretty high mag on normal lenses. Usually 1:1 occurs around the FL of the lens, in extention tubes. IE: 35mm lens hits 1:1 with 35mm of extension, 50mm lens with 50mm of extension.
This is also why usually a 100mm macro isnt F2.8 at 1:1, because it has so much internal extension, that its f5.6. same with these tubes. Youll loose about 3 stops with all the tubes added, and youll be reading F0.0 in the viewfinder (no electrical contacts) but it should still meter properly (shutter speeds that is) and youll have to MF but AF wont work at those mag's anyway. only problem is that youll always be shooting wide open.

true, but this just looks like something that would possibly make life a little easier I would think...
