    Default  Framing Question

I'm working on framing and finishing up a few 12x18s this afternoon and the frame that I bought from Jerry's (18x24, cheap, nice enough) came with a backing piece with two triangle 'eyes' for mounting and an unattached wire string.

So, what's the standard practice for attaching said wire to the hook/eye/opening things?

I know I can rig it to work, but I'd like to do it right since people might be purchasing these.

    Thanks, guys.

^ I had the same question, actually... just hadn't gotten around to asking it.

typically i will set the eyes about 4-6" down from the top of the frame (depending on size). the wire is wrapped around itself around one eye, pulled fairly tight and wound around the other eye.

Yeah, the eyes are already attached, so that's done and that's essentially how I figured the wire needed to be attached.

But yeah, thanks for the insight/experience.

didn't realize. sorry. i've studied enough painting frames to figure out how the wire goes. turns out it's as simple as it sounds.

I should've updated. It was exactly as you said, and all three are hanging up tonight for a test run before I get them all to their respective homes tomorrow. Everything is working well.

    Thanks.

    Awesome! Glad you like it.

And, on a semi-cool note, outside of my test print for that one, you have the only print of it anywhere on earth. Kind of neat.

Weird, the frames I use have teeth on the edges of the frame, but no wires....

but for wires, from what I've seen on the frames my mom has done "professionally" it's just twisted around itself a bunch of times.

Yeah, that's essentially how I did it. Pretty ghetto looking but they made it all night with no issue... so I suppose it works.

But on the flip side, these three framed shots were the best looking ones I've ever done. Felt really good to finally nail the print, mat, frame, and signature.

So, what do you do with the teeth? I have never hung frames with the teeth, but have some with them... do they just sit on nails?

I did take a shot of the two for the Carrboro contest, I'll post it up. The third hasn't been shot yet and it's 300 miles away now.

Cut the wire so it is about 6 inches longer than the width of the frame. Stick one end trough an eyelet so about 3 inches is sticking through, go through the eyelet again, come back and wrap it around the wire so it looks like a hang man's noose (about 5 wraps)

Do the same on the other side, but leave enough slack so the wire comes up to about 3 inches from the top of the frame when hanging.

If you assemble your own frames and install your own eyelets, you will want them to be about 6 inches down on each side.
