I just purchased a 2.5mm female to 2.5mm male extension cable up off ebay for about $6 shipped.

Now, you could just plug your cable release into the female end of this and plug the male end into the camera, but it is not a right angle so it adds weight to the port on the camera and could potentially break it internally.

So, I ordered a 3.5mm female to 2.5mm male right angle adapter which I will cut the 3.5 female end off.

I will also cut the Male end off of the 12 foot extension cable.

then I will solder the right angle adapter onto the 12 foot extender cable creating a 12 foot 2.5mm female to 2.5mm right angle male adapter.

Is this for shutter release?

Mine 450D takes a standard 2.5mm male plug too, but I haven't needed all of the 6' cable my release came with yet, so I doubt I'll need an extension.

Yeah, it is for a shutter release. My pentax brand release is only about 6'' or so. I bought a pentax wireless remote, but it won't do AF. So, if i want to practice lighting techniques and use myself as a subject, I need the AF and the cable reach.

oh, FYI the 5Dii finally has an IR port so it can use cheap remotes..... FINALLY.
