Default  Artistic Assignment #5 (Texture!) COMPLETED.

The theme for this Assignment is: Texture. This has TONS of possibilities, so everyone should be able to come up with something.

Guidelines (just to keep us all on track)

    * Photo(s) must relate to the Theme in some way. Creative relation to the theme is certainly allowed (and encouraged). Anything that is related in some way is legal.
    * Assignment is officially over!
    * Only photos that have been shot within the assignment date range are allowed.
    * No signup is required, participation is encouraged regardless of skill or equipment level (after all, its not the camera, it’s the photographer,)…we’re here to have fun.
    * Photo size limit: 800px on the longest side
    * Basically, photograph however you like and normally do…whatever photography is to you. As many (or few) bodies/lenses/formats//Post-processing as you’d like. Sticking to basic PP is encouraged, tho’.
    * If you’d like, post brief but relevant photo information and note PP (if any) is done (*Free GIMP software*). Maintain EXIF data if possible.
    * Keep comments on topic, constructive, and considerate.
    * posting finals shots in diptych or triptych form is strongly encouraged.
    * Have fun!

Thread format shamelessly cut and pasted from Satan's post. Thanks.

A diptych or a triptych is two or three (respectively) in this case individual photos or portions of photos shown together as a set. Usually sharing some theme or content in common.

Yeah, if you hadn't already figured it out, I copy and paste from the previous assignment and just change the date's assignment... I also did this last second as I ran out the door Friday so hence the assignment 4/6 and testures... Anyway, yes, textures, diptych or triptych if you can, and lets have some fun. I have a bunch of good ideas, but didn't get to any this weekend and have a boat show both days this coming weekend, so I'll have to find/make time this week.

Nice sand shot wyn. That was one of my ideas...

I just noticed this assignment ends on the 17th (I'm not very good with time). I start a string of 5 doubles in a row starting today, so I hope I can pull off something on Monday!

BTW, that super narrow DOF makes your shots look very 3D, Ben. Very cool!

first it was the wide angle, now Ben has discovered shallow DOF. He probably doesn't know the lens has apertures other than 1.4!

OK, here's my shots so far. I'm not super happy with them and especially not happy that I left the ISO at 1600. I have no idea how it got there, I thought I had checked it to be sure it wasn't set wrong even. Its evident in the noise in the photos, but I didn't do any NR to get rid of it.

I also added Ben borders to try them out and try out the tutorial. I made them b&w also, which I'm not sure if I like or not.

    Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel
    Exposure: 0.02 sec (1/50)
    Aperture: f/4
    Focal Length: 18 mm
    ISO Speed: 1600
    Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV

    Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel
    Exposure: 0.04 sec (1/25)
    Aperture: f/3.5
    Focal Length: 18 mm
    ISO Speed: 1600
    Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV

    Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel
    Exposure: 0.033 sec (1/30)
    Aperture: f/3.5
    Focal Length: 18 mm
    ISO Speed: 1600
    Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV

I have another idea, but not sure if I'll actually do it or not.

    very nice guys.
I didn't get a chance to shoot anything else over the weekend. I took my P&S to the boat show and snapped a few shots of interesting boats, but nothing for this as I left my 5D at home (it was pouring all AM and I knew my bag would be heavy enough with the brochure's we'd be picking up and our wet weather gear once it got nice...)

Also great work with borders. It really dresses up the images IMHO.

Ya know, I'm really not sure the 1600ness bothers me that much, especially with the B&W, it gives it a graininess. The only one that really bugs me is the noise in the darker spots of the first one. Of course, they all look worse in the small sizes than the bigger ones on my comp, but oh well.

w00t for brownie points for using teh "ben border"

I'll have to make some of my own and automate them so its easy.

the grain isn't all that bad as it is. w/o exif I would have just guessed you needed it for the light available.

Also, what's with the border in one, it's missing the white at the top and bottom?

Well, here it is in all its glory. I've had no time lately, so I carved about an hour out tonight to try and pull this off.

This is a road cut that ascends through about 200 vertical feet of Texas limestone, representing about 50 million years of deposition during the lower Cretaceous. Behind the shot and downhill you can find bivalve clams and snails. At the level of this shot you can find urchins. Further up the hill you can find corals.

Being a geology geek, I thought this was some pretty cool texture.

Did you check the exif ? That's almost 3 minutes of exposure, during which I was running around like a mad man with a flash and some gels. Hurry up dammit and recharge! I flew thru 2 sets of nimh's trying to get a correct exposure.

Not sure about the colors, I like the blue and yellow, but the green doesn't seem to help the rock at all.

TBH the colors almost distract from the texture, which looks like it should be really interesting.

Yeah, the blue/yellow seem to give the most contrast. If I had it to do again I would only use either the blue or yellow gel and that might emphasize the texture. But towards the end last night my flash was taking about 10 seconds to recharge, and it took about 6 flashes through the blue gel to get that exposure.

Oh well, it was fun anyway.

I might try it with longer exposure times to get more natural light on the foreground. You'll also get better star trails. Then I'd use some flash or flashlight to fill in a bit or add some contrast/color to the rock walls.

I can see, I can see and I am not disappointed at all. That is an awesome shot. Any day light shots of the limestone?

Yes it is, you just don't normally leave it intact... I'm so used to not being able to get it I don't bother with right clicking on your shots anymore... I will now though.
