Default  Artistic Assignment #1 (travel) COMPLETED:

OK, lets' get the ball rolling with our first assignment.

The theme for this Assignment is: TRAVEL!. I figured I'd pick a fairly broad topic that has something to do with my roadtrip next week!

Guidelines (just to keep us all on track)
    • Photo(s) must relate to the Theme (TRAVEL) in some way. Creative relation to the theme is certainly allowed (and encouraged). Anything that is related in some way is legal.
    • Assignment has finished, but feel free to share your images if you like.
    • Only photos that have been shot within the assignment date range are allowed.[/SIZE][/b]
    • No signup is required, participation is encouraged regardless of skill or equipment level (after all, its not the camera, it’s the photographer,)…we’re here to have fun.
    • Photo size limit: 800px on the longest side
    • Basically, photograph however you like and normally do…whatever photography is to you. As many (or few) bodies/lenses/formats//Post-processing as you’d like. Sticking to basic PP is encouraged, tho’.
    • If you’d like, post brief but relevant photo information and note PP (if any) is done (*Free GIMP software*). Maintain EXIF data if possible.
    • Keep comments on topic, constructive, and considerate.
    • Have fun!

Thread format shamelessly cut and pasted from Satan's post. Thanks.

Bunch of cheaters going on actual vacations!

I guess I'll just have to get creative then. I actually have an entire day off on Sunday so I think I'll bring my camera home from work and try to go shooting.

Enjoy your vacations you wankers! (I'm jealous)

damn I wish I had my camera on the plane today.

As we broke through the clouds on the ascent a HUGE friggin rainbow appeared to the right side of the plane. The rainbow combined with the fluffy clouds and the "looking out the portal" look would have been exceptional.

Dammit, I guess it's only one of those mental photos now.

I think this is the first time in my life that I've ever turned in homework early!

I went for a bike ride yesterday and found this location overlooking Lake Travis (this place would be fantastic for future shots when the sunsets are more dramatic).

I'm chasing the sun at the end of the road.

Dunno if the exif is preserved but here are the details anyway:

Shot in RAW, minimal adjustments on conversion. Minimal pp in PS: slight shadows/highlights to bring out the bike and slight color sat to at least add some color back, unsharp mask after resize 50/1/4.

    Canon 350D with 70-200mm @ 75mm
    1/160 @ f/4 and ISO800

That does look like it'll be a nice place when the weather is right.

I went shooting yesterday but there wasn't anything "travelly" to shoot where I was. Maybe tonight I'll get something.

It matches your mountains in the critique thread

It's my favorite of the two, but together they show how you can manipulate the background of a picture based on what zoom you're using, while keeping the foreground looking the exact same. Those should be kept around for a future tutorial on the matter! (hint hint, Ben)

I am no longer able to please you. It's within plus or minus .5 degrees of perfect depending on which horizon line you pick on the right side. I picked the horizon just where the hills and the lake meet with the measure tool, not the little peninsula jetting out.

Strangely enough, after all this going back and forth, I think I like the original better, horizon be damned. But if I were to do it again I would love to have some sort of artificial light source on the left to paint the bike with. And of course, a more dramatic sunset.

You shoot raw and use Photoshop CS2, right? Are you using the CS2 RAW tool to rotate it or the measure tool and rotate -> arbitrary?

Fix it in the RAW tool... SO much easier. It'll even auto-crop it, too. Just pick the little angle, then draw a line, and BAM... done.

Cool, I'll check it out! I think I'm hopeless though, cause I thought the horizon was good enough in the first one!

BTW, I've got a brilliant and creative idea for my next few pics under the guise of travel. Especially since I don't have the time to go anywhere. Thanks to all for the lesson on horizons.

    Haha, shhhhhhhhhh.

What you do, when the flight attendants pass by to check, is you just tilt the lens up to hide the screen. .. and tada it's a film camera

Just got back from my trip to Mammoth...

I have to give credit to my wife for this shot of me. She's getting better with the camera. She finally figured out what "those bracket things" are on the focusing screen.

Exif should be intact. Straightened the horizon, USM 85% Radius 1 Threshold 4, bumped the contrast.

I'm still going through my shots. Should upload ASAP.

This is a shot from last weekend in the Painted Hills, part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in central Oregon. Pretty basic post process in Nikon Capture, little curves, sharpen and that's about it.

Travel is a big part of what we do, we're always our exploring new stuff. My wife likes to take the big, "overall" shots, I like to look for shots like these that are a little different and not something everyone would see when they are in a new place.

I like the textures and the colors, although I'd probably nudge the saturation up a bit myself. The only thing that I don't really like is the closest hill is out of focus and IMO overexposed.

Thanks for the input guys. My intent was to have only the middle hill in focus, but it did end up with the rear two hills in focus, and not the front. I have a few versions of it I might take a look at and see if there is a version with better depth of field.

Do you feel the front hill is blown out, or just too bright in comparison to the rest of the image. It is a much lighter color than the rest of the image so I was careful not to blow it out.

I doubt it's really blown out, but it is too bright and in combination with it being out of focus, it feels like its blown out. Personally I'd try to keep all the hills in focus but that's just my taste. I'd definitely exposing something so prominently out of focus in the foreground so that it's that much brighter than your in focus subject.

The first hill seems alright as far as exposure goes but it may stand out more because there is such a drastic difference in color when compared to the other hills. The first hill seems out of place.

I like the overall shot though.

unfortunately it's the same subject matter as tardy. Sorry, but it's all I've got.
On one hand, I like the first picture because it's simple. I also like the second because it includes the backpack/tripod, and helmet which works with the "travel" theme a little bit better.
These pics weren't too thought out unfortunately. It was a HOT day on the bike, and I just wanted to take a few and get on my way.

Nikon D50 with the 10.5mm fisheye I just picked up.

Pls Critique, I am a Noob.

    siztsix,
you're suffering from the same thing that happens to me with the 12mm on the 5D... You use it because you can (especially when it's new). You need to always keep something in the frame to keep the viewers interest. Those plain blue skies could really use some clouds. In the second shot the tree is cut off too much and the bike crowds the edge of the frame. The first shot is better with the sun at the top to add interest in the top half of the frame, but you didn't give the bike enough space. You want room in front of an object that can move (cars, people moving, bikes, anything like that) so that the viewer can see it going somewhere. Basically if you took the first shot, but had the bike flopped (still from the read, just with it's ass on the right edge, but with the same gap to the edge of the frame) it would work much better.

Don't let any of this discourage you, just go out and shoot a crapload with the new UWA lens. They take a lot of practice to get interesting compositions. I find vertical shots do work better though, at least for me. Your exposures and colors are great though.

I was going to comment on how close the bike was to the edge of the image in the second shot. I agree the color looks great.

I use a D50 also and I find I have trouble getting color to pop most of the time.

Ultra wide angle and fisheye lenses really can slip in to the novelty area (same with macro) where you shoot it that way just because you can, not because it was worth shooting that way. That's a hard trap for almost anyone to avoid, especially if you've just gotten your first lens that gets you in to either of those ranges of photography.

    I really appreciate everyone's feedback.
I was just using the lens because it was(is) a new toy.

Both shots were cropped at the bottom. I thought it was better than seeing the oil-stained driveway that I had pulled into. I can see what you guys are saying though with the lack of space.
I def. like the cut-off of the sun on the first pic.
Again, I really appreciate everyone's constructive critisism and I have a feeling this forum will be a step in the right direction for me.

OK, we did our crazy road trip last week, so I have ton's of shots that could all be considered "travel". But I'm going with the ones that are more so and also all have my car in them since it's what we traveled IN...
