Default  Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS vs ef 10-22

Im looking for something wider than my ef 24-85( which i want to sell I never use it)

So Ive been searching around, I'd like a wide lens. that I can use as a general day to day walk around ect.

    I use a Canon 20d. Only lenses I have are a nifty, and a 24-85 ef.

So whatcha think? How good is the canon at 10mm? Does it fisheye? I dont want that. And is it worth paying more for the IS on the 17-55 because that right there in 17- 40 L price range ect.

Sigma 17-70. Seriously, at least consider it. I don't keep bringing it up for no reason.

Thanks Scott I forgot about that one. I'm on page 67 on POTN for the archive 17-70 sigma right now. How was your auto-focus? Look sliek a few people have had problems with that.
The good thing is that is it could be well within the budget. Look slike I found a few FS around 300, I'll sell the 24-85,

I'll have to look into it alittle more tomorrow. During school.

Anyone locally have this? I'd like to try it out for a few minutes. Just snap a few pics and se ehow I like it.

AF is great, don't worry about it, people like to complain about every detail. It's an awesome lens, I like it better than the twice as expensive 17-40 L. For what you're describing, I'd say it's perfect for you.

I think the 10-22 (or 10-20) is great, but a bit wide for most people to use as a walkaround lens.

It's a great lens, but that's exactly my complaint with it (I used a friend's for a few days a while back). Just not near enough coverage for me as a main walk-around lens but it's a fantastic secondary lens.

And here's my anecdote to go along with that--so, I wanted to take my camera with me to Chapel Hill yesterday because I needed my PAD, I haven't taken any photos at UNC since I was in school, and b/c generally I carry my camera around. I wanted to go light/fun, so I only brought the 10-20.

On top of the chancellor's building (an awesome, old building), there was a totally sweet looking hawk. Could I take any sort of photo of it with my UWA lens? Hell no.

UWAs are a lot of fun, but you will find yourself in situations where they are very limiting. Something in the 17~70 range is much better as a walkaround lens.

yeah mark, it all depends on what you're shooting... That's why I try to make my fin light setup include at least 2 lenses so I can get some reach when I need it....

But I love when I'm out with either the 17-40 or 24-70 with people (friends/family) and they'll see some detail/item/animal far away from us and say "hey, shoot that with you zoom lens!"...

As for which lens to get, I'd suggest the 17/18~55/70 option first. It's the standard zoom range that's better for getting "most things". A 10-2x is a wonderful lens, but it's a UWA which isn't for everyone.
    I own this joint!

Hanna KNOWS how the 10-20 looks, and she STILL sometimes asks me that!

I DO have a photo of the hawk, too, but you have to zoom in to like 500% to tell it's a very pixelated bird.

Yeah, even with the 70mm, it's maybe a tiny bit bigger.... I'll hand it to her and she'll make a comment...

Yeah, another vote for the 17-70mm. And awesome lens! Scott recommended it to me an I haven't looked back. It's my walkaround lens, for sure.

ok 10-22 out of the picture

    17-55 IS vs 17-70 sigma.

Most of my pics are just me taking goof pictures about whatever. But the ones I take for serious reasons are mainly in lower light situations suchas a dimly lit museum,( army photos) ect.

I love the landscape photos that scott has with this lens. does anyone have any indoors or low light photos such as photojournalistic type photos?

I guess My only issue would be I'd like to purchase this next lens and not worry about any other lenses for a while..

This up coming purchase and then a 70-200 f4( for my automotive photography)

For low light conditions the f2.8 and IS from the 17-55 would seem like the route to go.

Any one near me have either of these lenses? I know scott just sold his 17-70 I'd like to snap a few shots with one.

Yeah, Reed has one if you're ever going to be in Raleigh. I'm sure he'd let you check it out.

As for shooting low-light, if you're planning to be indoors, forget the Sigma. It's a fantastic lens, but there's better options with constant f/2.8 (or better) and IS that would better fit your needs.

more is lenses would they happen to be cheaper than the 17-55? because if I can find a slammin lens for less I might be able to get both haha.

I live in fayetteville actually. But I'll be in raleigh tomorrow night shooting some pics for a friend of mines cousin( she and some of her friend want to start a website( yeah that kind of website!) But Ive been wanting to take some more glamour nude photos. Im not really sure where This will be taking place but hey it would be a great photo-op and lens trial haha

By tomorrow night, do you mean today, Friday? As long as you're not here at night, there's a pretty good chance I'll be around.

We postponed the shoot. I appreciate the offer though. Maybe we can do a photo meet somewhere and take some pics

But I wonder does anyone have the 18-55 IS lens? Looks to be a pretty good review for only 200ish bucks.. not as good as the 17-55is with a F/2.8 But nic enone the less.
