    Default  Which wide angle zoom?

If you saw my thread, you know my camera and wide angle zoom is broken. The lens is "not economically repairable" and the camera is yet to be determined. I will either get my 30D back or I'll get insurance money and buy a 7D. For now, I would appreciate some recommendations on what wide angle zoom to get.

    What I currently have:
    Canon 30D (broken)
    Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 (broken)
    Canon 50 f/1.8
    Canon 70-200 f/4

    Lenses I'm thinking about:

    Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS:
    Tamron 17-50 f/2.8:

    Really not sure....

Let me know what your opinions are, reasons would be helpful. If you can think of any other suggestions you can throw those out there as well.

    Thanks!

17-70, especially if they added OS to it.

the 17-40mm is a FULL FRAME uwa zoom. It's only for L whores on croppers. I'd also consider that tamron 17-xx 2.8 constant option as well. If/when you go UWA zoom (the 10-20 you listed) also consider the tokina 11-16mm.

another vote for the 17-70, and 10-20 if you need an uwa.

May as well add the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 to the list of considerable options... it's roughly one-half stop slower than the Tokina but offers double the range. (This is the lens I'm looking at for UWA on a cropper.)

Alright, I'll go with the 17-70 as was my plan. Sorry thechickencow!

Jerm, I've been eyeing the 10-20 f/3.5 myself, and have made a few question about it in other UWA threads, but I don't think anyone knows anything about it's performance. Have you read any reviews or have any time with it yourself?

the Tamron 17-50 is pretty awesome. i have one. at least have a look at it before deciding.

and i'll second the Tokina 11-16 for a UWA. it even makes ride5000 seem competent.

I've read mixed reviews at POTN. I did find this review somewhat helpful, though: http://www.juzaphoto.com/eng/article...ron_tokina.htm

EDIT: ...and by "mixed reviews" I mean that some people think it's worth the extra couple hundred while others think the other Sigma is just as capable. I have yet to hear someone say they hate it.

I'll do some research on the Tamron, but the OS on the Sigma as well as the longer focal range sounds awfully good.

Ben, when your 5dmkII drowned, how long after the estimate did it take for you to get the money?

I've got the Tammy, and never really felt limited by the 50mm longer end (or, if I did, it's because I really wanted to go long, so I'd pop on the 70-200 I used to have).

On the other hand, I might feel limited by the f/4 on the long end of the Sigma, but then I like doing a lot of indoor, low-light shooting. If you don't, then you may not need constant f/2.8 -- and I haven't used any Sigma lenses, so I can't speak to the quality or reliability of their stuff as compared to Tamron.

True, but on the lower end I have 4 stops of OS in addition to my f/2.8. And at the long end, at f/4 the 4 stops provided by the OS will be better than just straight f/2.8.

We need to define "better" here, though. OS will be better for getting faster shutter speeds, but won't be better for getting you shallower depth of field.

Again, your shooting style and preference will tell you what you need more! If you were happy with the Sigma before you played the Solid Rocket Booster Separation game, then by all means... get another!

yeah, that's the bitch with OS, it can't help DOF and it can't help keep people still. I love it, but I wish it was available on more fast lenses as well.

So I went ahead and ordered the sigma.

The deciding factor was the filters I had matched the 72mm of the sigma and I didn't want to have to buy 67mm for the tamron.

yep. Honestly, I'd love to see both. Lens versions in longer lenses, body for anything less than 70mm effective? And maybe both for the longer lenses?
