    Default  Vivtar 90mm f2.5 Macro

    Needed a macro lens but didn't want to spend money so I grabbed this lens off of FM for less than a buck fifty. Build is impressive, very solid which is typical for the older MF lenses. MF ring is very smooth but there's a good deal of resistance making critical MF a bit easier. Sharp wide open, great stopped down, easy metering on the D700, good n creamy bokeh. Just snapshots around the house for now since by the time I get home it's dark but this lens leaves nothing to be desired so far.
    Need a cheap macro and experience some MF goodness? Don't be scared

    That does appear to have nice bokeh in those shots, and just as importantly, only a small amount of axial chromatic aberration (though neither shot was much of a stress test).

    damn, that puts the "rings are cheap" argument to shame. Thanks for the info, I might have to fish for a used one....

    Whilst farting around I also took the infamous 'lens cap pic' handheld. There was a bit viewable on the LCD but that's silver on black w/ flash and I'm not sure that translates well to real world use.

    Guys this is one of the best 1:1 macro's ever made. Close to the quality of the 105mm f/2.8 Series One lens from Vivitar. So if you can find one, and you are in the market, go for it. And screw it since this is a 1:1 lens, get a set of tubes, and make it even better. Or buy reversing rings, or the coupling rings to make it ridiculous. Also sounds like you got a really good deal for $150 for this lens. The mount of course makes the price lower or higher. Pentax ones are usually retarded high.

    Here is the Pentax Forums review of this lens:

    This is it's brother which is a lot more affordable. But you lose a 1/3 of a stop, no biggie.

    Here is all of Vivitar's primes BTW. They made some really great stuff.

    I used to own a vivtar series 1 105mm F/2.5 (I sold mine for $175 and they sell for around $500 now)
    It was amazing, probably the best macro ever made. The 90mm i supposed to be right up there.

    Edit:: Andy already said this.
