    i currently shoot canon.
my 70-200 f/2.8 is a Sigma EX DG USM, bought it many years ago after I got my brand new 20D - still works well, but could use a cleaning/service/upgrade to newer tech.

I didn't. Part of moving to Nikon was specifically so I could shooting with f/2.8 zooms. I needed usable ISO 6400 before I could do that. My primary Flyball lens when shooting Canon was the 135mm f/2L.

same optics but there's a BUNCH of versions. I had the 70-200 EX DG (before the macro version). I believe there are 2 versions of the macro AND the new OS as well. The version I had was the sharper of the two when the first macro came out but I think the second version fixed that. I've also had the 70-200 2.8 IS (for a week) and the 70-200 f4 IS if you have questions. I then went to a 100-400 for canon and now a 70-300 for nikon. I also had the 300 f/4 IS in there for a while with the 70-200 f4 IS.

I'm pretty sure they're identical in terms of their internals - that's the only way Sigma is able to be competitive. Only the mounts are different.

i have been looking at a new copy of the newest macro version of the sigma. this one:http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...2_8_II_EX.html

if i can sell my 70-300 it would put me in the place to be able to buy a 70-200/2.8 of some sort. just want to get acceptably sharp without breaking the bank

If you're doing paid work I would either go with the Canon if you're only going to have one lens, or have two Sigmas. Both of mine gave me trouble. Not flat-out failure, but weird enough problems to give me pause.

Oh, and I tried the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 first. Slow-assed focusing and average optics. The Sigma is better in every way.

I've been using the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L (non-IS) for something like fifteen years. I've had three of these, and if anything happened to my new one I would likely replace it with the same lens again. This lens has worked so well for action sports that I've never even had to consider any other zoom in this range.

I have been using my 70-200 f/2.8L IS a lot more recently, and I wouldn't want to live without it for weddings... but that's probably more than you're looking to spend.

Wait till the new Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS is available and see what the image quality/price are.

I read a bit about the tamron is has reviews that same exactly what Sam said here. The canon non IS or the sigma are my two choices right now since I don't know of other options.

I have some time to work with and hopefully the newest sigma comes out and is reviewed soon. I don't need IS but is the new one has better optics it may be worth a try especially if the price is nice.

If you're shooting crop, I'd look long and hard at the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 as well. It's a great focal length range on a crop body, has great image quality, decent AF speed and is a fantastic, compact size.

i am shooting a 5Dii so the 50-150 isnt the best option. but a good idea and maybe very good for a crop shooter reading this thread

D'oh, sorry. FWIW, I used to use the 50-150mm f/2.8 on my Mark III and it just barely showed vignetting, but probably would be pushing it on FF.

So the sigma 70-200 OS was announced/launched/whatever with PMA which accoding to their site was Feb 21-23rd.

Does anyone know or have an idea what kind of wait time i am looking at until the Sigma is available, tested, reviewed?

i would love to end up with one of these. it will all depend on how much i sell my other lens for and if i find one at a price i can handle at the right time.

i dont mind weight, i dont want or need a light set up.

I too am wondering about a nice 2.8 zoom lens. I currently have the 70-200 f4/l but would like to make the jump to 2.8 to help out with sports and lower light conditions.

I've heard great things about canon 2.8 but it's $$$. Most on POtN say the sigma is a nice lens for the money, but optics aren't on par with the canon 2.8.

depends on how much you need it, maybe renting the 2.8 when you need it would be a good idea and just keep your f/4 .. (it is significantly lighter) I'm not sure about rental prices, but for us the 70-200 f/2.8 is about 40 a day.. and significantly cheaper for a weekend / week rental.

have had many IQ compliments on photos shot through my sigma. does quite well in low light, full light, in the dirt, etc.

i sold everything i wanted to to fund my 70-200. now the hard decision is whether i buy the current sigma 70-200, wait for the new one to come out, keep saving for a canon (non IS) or what.

anyone have a feel for how long i would be waiting for the new sigma to actually be available?

hmmm... this is not easy to decide. i have money burning a hole in my pocket. but the OS version sounds like a marked improvement over the previous. i dont know that i can wait for the new one. plus i have some shoots i would want to use it for before the new one comes out.

    thanks, ben

photo4less used to be sigma4less until they added more product lines. I've bought from them before. The gray/domestic issue is the one thing to watch for. Also, they used to charge way more for shipping (like $25) which made the prices on B&H or Adorama much closer than they originally appear (especially if one of the other two offer free shipping). So just do your homework.

Yeah shipping is about $20 bucks. but with a list price of $100 less its very worth it, if and only if its a USA warranty. I dont want grey market in case i need to get it adjusted or something more than micro adjustment on my camera can take care of.

yeah, those would be my thoughts as well in light of sigma's recent QC issues with AF. I bought from them ~5 years ago. I remember there being something different with their warranties though which would hint that they sell gray? Not sure how the service worked though. You know I bet if you call sigma specifically they'll probably know...

I bought from sigma4less (when it was still sigma4less) before, USA warranty and shipping wasn't bad, still saved over everywhere else.

thanks Ben. that makes sense. i would think a one year would be enough for any optics issues. the kicker there is the build quality and exterior coatings. if there is any issue there its likely to be further down the line.
