    Default  Lens Tests for Focus

    Hello,

I've got a EF 50mm MkI.. 1987 so I know its old. But recently I've found that the majority of my pictures with it wide open are out of focus.. My camera is a 30D and its set to center spot focus. I've double checked the settings and sometimes even on manual focus I'm having issues. Is there some kind of test that I can run on it to see if its a lens issue or if I am just aiming in the wrong spots?

    Thanks

Shoot a ruler, focus on a specific point on the ruler manually until a focus point 'locks' on and is red. After that, pixel peep your eyes out!

one thing is to take note of whether or not the lens consistently focuses to the front or to the back.

ie, take a portrait, focus on the eye with the center spot, if the ear is in perfect focus, it's back; if the tip of the nose, it's front.

if it is ALWAYS to one side, there's an issue. if it's unpredictable, consider your technique.

^ what they said. If you're bored, setup something on your desk and see how it looks. Ruler or a keyboard or anything like that will work. See where it is in focus -vs- where you think it should be. If it's always off in the same direction it's the lens and with a 30D your options are either getting the camera or lens fixed (if all your lenses are off, get the camera adjusted, otherwise it's the lens). The newer bodies have Micro Adjust AF which lets you fix this in body but that doesn't help you.

interesting.. thats a good read ride5000.. i think its just a "backfocus" then .. its focusing too far. like the ears are in focus, this usually only happens when I'm shooting wide open, dof is only around 2ft ..

it's focusing IN BACK of where you want it, so yeah, backfocusing.
if it's all the time, send it in. FYI the original version of the 50 1.8 is worth a lot more than the new version thanks to it's metal mount.

Not only is it possible, it occurs on a lot of primes when shooting wide open.

oh.. ew. cuz i thought a brick background would be a good one for a quick model shoot.. but instead of getting a nicely blurred one.. i've got one that looks shaky and theres tons of CA .. but the model is hella sharp tho.. MF all the way!

Shakey sounds like a slow shutter speed. The CA can be taken out in post.

like... the brick wall isn't a nice smooth out of focus.. but it looks shaky and theres a blue tinge coming out of it..

That is strange. I can tell you that she is too close to the wall to get a really blurred out effect.

yeah. figured it wasn't hand shake.. and true, there was a highway behind me, shooting on a cropped body with a 50mm doesn't give us much room before i'm on the highway! haha.. i'd say she was about 4ft in front of the wall. i'll give the blue desaturation a shot.
