So I got one of these a week or two ago... correction, I got two of these... but that's another story.
Anyways, the Canon 400mm f/2.8 IS L is one remarkable piece of glass. It's heavy, large and unwieldy, but not as heavy, large, or unwieldy as the Sigma 300-800. With a 1.4X TC it becomes a 560mm f/4, and with a 2.0X TC it becomes a 800mm f/5.6. I was hoping that with the use of TC's, this lens would remain sharp, and give me similar range and framing flexibility as the Sigmonster. Long story short, when I tried the 400 with a 1.4X TC, it did just as good if not better than I expected, and possibly better than the 500 I just got rid of. I'll get around to reviewing the lens more in depth once I have my 2.0X TC back, but for now, and as late as it is, check out the below pics.
These were taken tonight at the Orioles/Red Sox game. EXIFs should be intact, but here are the basics: handheld, 5D, ISO1600, 1.4X TC, minimal PP using DPP.
Small imageshack versions:
the bat actually shattered with this hit, notice the large splinter by the right forearm; this is more obvious in the original below
