Icon Sad  ERR 01 - Lens Communication Error

So, I shot a wedding on Saturday. It was the first time I put the 5Dii through any serious work (~750 shots), and also the first time I've ever seen ERR 01 (Lens communication error). Happened between 5-10 times. I shot the wedding gripped with the 24-70L exclusively (OEM batteries too).

Usually power-cycling the camera cleared the error but a couple of times, I had to power down, remove and replace the lens, and then power back up.

Should I e-mail Canon Support, or what?

Unattached and reattached the lens and it went away. I would call, but maybe also clean the contacts?

It is a brand new lens though, isn't it?

Contacts look pristine to me on both the lens and camera, though. Can they get that fouled up in three months?

For the record, I've never seen this error before, on any camera / lens combination I've owned.

Just with the 24-70? when you put another lens on the 5d2 works fine all the time? Does the 24-70 do that message on another body?

If it's only this lens, and the contacts look clean, then most likely there is an internal problem with the lens. Maybe a loose internal wire or something like that.

If it happens with other lenes, then it's most likely a problem with the body.....

Currently, I only have the 5Dii, so I can't test with another body. That said, I've put maybe 300-400 shots through the 5Dii/24-70 combination before this weekend and never had any issue. I've never had an issue with any other lens on the 5Dii, either (maybe another 500 photos).

Equipment used that day was the gripped 5Dii with 24-70L permanently attached, alternating with either a 580EX II or ST-E2 (or nothing) on the hotshoe. Grip was the BG-E6 with two OEM batteries. Conditions were ~90% of time indoors at room temperature, 10% outdoors in cold weather (5C / 41F) with a very light drizzle.

Both the body and the lens are three months old tomorrow. Like I said before, contacts look pristine to me, but I guess there's no harm in cleaning them further. The 24-70 has gotten a little wet in the rain previously, but nothing that would normally cause concern.

Get some 91% rubbing alcohol and a qtip and go to town on both sets. The voltage needed / used is fairly low, and very strictly controlled, even a little bit of fouling can cause issues. Id try that and then shoot a bunch and see what happens.
also, shooting a wedding without a backup? risky....

    Thanks for the tips.

Yes, it would normally be risky, but I was the third "apprentice" shooter -- there would be no shortage of photos even if my gear went tits up.

my XT did this as well, even though the contacts look clean, try cleaning them and all the ones on your lenses. I did this before my last event, no more errors.
FYI i used a lense cloth, no alcohol or any debris creating materials, to be safe i had the lense mount facing down and held it over my head to clean it, just to make sure nothing went into the body.
When in doubt, just shoot the hell out of it

My 50d/Tamron 70-200mm did this last weekend. Of course I was shooting in a downpour. I powered it down, powered back up and it was fine.

After a few more errors on two shoots last week, it's gone in to Canon for verification. I'll be Brickless for four weeks.

Yeah, I finally got around to sending my 17-55 out as I was having the same issue. I hope canon doesn't rape me on this one.

Finally sent it off to Canon. They are estimating about $100 for repairs which includes the 2 day shipping cost. Not as bad as I thought it would be.

Just under 3 weeks later, it's back. Canon replaced the diaphragm and collar (dunno which one) under warranty. Hope it's all better now!

It makes sense, since the aperture would get 'stuck' almost every time it threw the error. Sometimes, not even powering down, unmounting and remounting the lens, and powering back up would fix it.

I have had this issues before with my 20-35 3.5-4.5. I think the only real solution is a firmware update or a sale.
