    Default  Tokina 11-16 worth it?

Or would I better saving for the Canon 10-22?

    do you need the 2.8?

do you need the extra mm (10% wider)?

If you have the cash and can find the Toke, my vote is yes. But then again, I have the Sigma 10-20 4-5.6

Well I'd like a faster lens so the wider the aperture the better. I'm more concerned with sharpness though.

I suppose it depends... There really is no right answer, and it'll hinge on what you shoot. I'm thinking about selling my tokie for the canon for the extra reach on both ends and since I usually use a wide-angle lens stopped down most of the time.

I think that both lenses are sharp. Ben and I shot at Sachuest this week, he had the canon and I had the tokie if you are looking for samples.

I really like my tokina. It's the only UWA I have used, but from my experience it produces very sharp pictures. The zoom range IS very limited though. I sort of just treat it like a prime lens. Overall though I am very pleased with it's build quality and images.

I have never used the 10-22, but I can say that the Tokina is worth it. It is a great UWA, I would recommend it to anyone, not sure if they are any easier to find now than they used to be.

I've owned both. Both are almost exactly the same price (~$600) if you buy the 10-22 used (I did).
The tokina is 2.8. If you need it you need it. The tokina is very sharp. It's built maybe a bit better but the AF/MF clutch isn't perfect (if you drop the lens it can break, but don't drop your lens?).
The 10-22 is better in terms of flare and distortion. It's wider AND longer and it's also smaller and lighter.

I switched for the width and the distortions.

but basically ALL the UWA options for croppers these days are awesome. You just have to set a budget and pick your priorities to match. If you just care about sharpness then both are great, the canon's IQ is only better for flare and distortion. Oh, and the canon AFs faster and silently, but faster isn't a huge concern because at these wide FLs it's hardly moving.

I own the Tokina and dont have a Canon so I can't comment on the 10-22, but I'll echo what everyone else says here:

you want the extra speed or the extended focal range? Which do you value more?

I think the Tokina is fantastic and the ability to take fast wide angle shots at night, I wouldnt trade that at all. It's incredibly sharp for a lens with no built in IS.

One question I have. Since the Nikon mount version requires the SLR body to have in body AF servo motor for AF, I know that Canon SLRs these days use mostly lenses with built in AF motors, does that mean the Tokina version of the 11-16 have a built in AF servo?

These were shot handheld on P mode if that helps,

I just recently sold my 10-22 and bought the 11-16
Since I mostly do night photography it was perfect.
But I did miss my Canon. Sometimes you just need the extra focal length.
I just sold all my ef-s lenses since I got the 5D mkII last month.

If I ever go back to the crop body again I will get the 10-22.
But Canon should make the mkII an f/3.5 all over and it would be perfect.

This site seems like a great place! I had never heard of it before, until today when I saw a post from jacobsen at potn
So I will see you guys around and have to get familiar with this site.
    Happy shooting

After spending a few days researching the 4 major UWA lenses for crop canons, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Tokina. Should get it next week

It'll likely be a primary lens for some traveling I'll be doing next year (NYC, San Diego, Ireland and possibly a few other smaller locations). The regular zoom I had planned on getting (Tamron 17-50) will have to wait until next summer or this time next year.

Can you believe this is a handheld shot...from the window of a moving taxi (albeit very slowly in bad NYC traffic) but I wasn't propped or stable at all, very fast and sharp

The lens arrived today. Feels solid and I can't wait to get out and start using it. Think I'll make a trip to OU this weekend and see what I come up with.

Here is my second or third shot with it, and I'll be sure to post more from this weekends walkabout.

    Posted a handful here.
    Walk about OU's campus

I'm just barely scratching the surface of the possibilities this lens provides. I'll be in NYC in a week, we'll see what I can come up with during that week long trip.

I've been happy with the Tokina. I contemplated selling it but decided to keep it- it's fast and built very well. I think that it focuses as fast as the 10-22, but I haven't tested that. I had the 10-22 for a couple years and really enjoyed it too. It provides more distortion and a more versatile focal range IMO.
