    Default  tokina 10-17 fisheye/super wide

    i just recently rented a canon 14mm superwide. i learned that i really like the wide angle lense, so now i am trying to find one that fits the budget.

    would the tokina be a good alternative?

    that tokina is a fisheye.
    Fisheye's != Wide angle...

    They are different in that a fisheye has a lot more distortion. It's also fun and a "cool effect" but you need to know that they are different, and I'd suggest you rent some sort of fisheye before you buy one.

    FYI a 15mm fisheye has more coverage than a 14mm prime.

    Lenses to check out are the Canon 10~22mm EF-S, the Sigma 10~20mm EX DC, and the Sigma 12~24mm EX DG (if you ever think you'll go FF). There are other 3rd party lenses out there, but I'm not as familiar with them. The Tokina 10~17mm is a good lens or so I've heard, it's just a fish. You can also chop the hood and use it on a FF camera from what I've heard. There is also a Sigma 15mm fish that supposedly better than the canon version.

    Isn't it fisheye only at the wide end? I thought I remembered they correct the distortions at the longer end and it's basically rectilinear.

    Well now I'm not sure:
    Ultra Wide Angle

    This lens enables the shooting of full-frame fisheye images with a 180° angle of view and a focal length of 10mm. Furthermore, the lens offers super wide-angle performance that allows photographer to make use of dramatic changes in angle of view resulting from slight changes in focal length.
    From what I had heard on PotN I thought it was fish the whole way...
    If not that makes it pretty interesting.

    I don't think they're miss marketing it either way though. I was more warning you that I know for a fact that it's a fish at the 10mm end and that fish eyes are way different than ultra wide angle lenses. You played with the 14mm NON fish, and this will just be different is all. For better or for worse.

    i need to research it to find out where the line is. i want as wide as i can get, and if it uses the 10mm for the fisheye, i should shop for a different lense. i don't even know if i would like to shoot with a fisheye yet.
