Default  Anyone interested in a lens shootout?

A buddy of mine that got a job as a full time photographer was passing through town this weekend, and he took the chance to show me one of his new toys. It's a Canon 24-70 f/2.8L lens. Well, for my birthday, I got the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 which seems like a pretty close competitor as far as specs go. So, the next time he comes to town I told him I want to do some tests and see how a $390 Tamron stacks up to a $1000+ Canon L lens.

Any tests in particular that you guys would recommend?

    AF tests for sure.
Then just the usual shoot out with both on tripods, same camera, same setting, going through all the f stops (the full ones at least) at a few different angles.

I did this same test between my L and EX DG versions back when I got it. My L is sharper than my EX DG was at 70, but the EX DG was better at 24... The AF, weather sealing, colors, and contrast won me over with the L along with it's build (the sigma was no slouch). But it was when I went from the 1DmII to the 5D so I figured the slower AF in the camera would work out similar with the faster lens AF and it does nicely.

I've heard the same of the Tamron, that it can hold it's own with the L... You get what you pay for but the Sigma and Tamron versions are worth the money for sure. Personally I'd love to see a tamron sigma shootout.
