I love it... it's my main outdoor/landscape lens.

This is from my last backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevadas -- All the wide angle shots are with the 10-22. (You might find some with the 24-70 there though):

    http://www.thellanas.com/ImageGaller...amsWilderness/

I pretty much always have the circular polarizer on it except trying to keep the lens cap on it could be a bitch for being thinner for UWA lenses to avoid vignetting.

Damn Vic, you've got a ton of great shots in there.

Too bad your gallery2 is a tad slow to load them...
and don't take that the wrong way, I'm using it too, and have always wondered why some installs are slower than others?

And Matt, I can't believe it's taken you this long to get a UWA zoom. I know the 24-70mm is your money maker, but I can't live w/o a UWA zoom.

I know, After the ME trip and some of my recent shoots, I really could have benefited with a wider lens. My thought however is to skip the 10-20 and go 5D in the spring, keeping the 24-70, which will give me around the same framing as the 18-55 does currently. Then using the 70-200 on the 30D. Eventually picking up a 17-40 and FE.... Thats the plan at least... still hoping to get a few more weddings for next year.

Yeah, plan your upgrade path out now... If you're going 5D hold off if you can... But if you're sticking with 1.6ers, get a 10-2x NOW!

waiting for the 5D MII announcement and the flood to begin!

Used 5Ds are going for 1700s now, I figure depending on how the flood is, Ill be able to get one close to the cost of a 40D kit. Plus after playing with the 5D a few times at BB, im convinced.

def. going used, for the $$ and if your smart about it, you save so much $$. Only thing im considering new is the 70-200 2.8 IS. just bc used prices are only 75$ below BH now.

I love this lens, even though now that I have the 5d and the 17-40 I rarely use it on the Rebel, but it's still awesome. Here's a few examples from the weekend after I first got it:

And from Colorado a bit later:

These are all landscapes, but I'm betting that you could get a lot of fun shots at weddings with how wide this lens is.

The sigma 10-20 is just about as good and 33% less.
Actually depending on who you ask, it's better at some things, and the canon is better at others. Both being very good overall so it's a toss up.

subimatt - I would like to have a wide angle (in the 10-14 range), and then another 20ish to 70-100ish
    How is http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=420721 for a $175 28-105
    or http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=419918 for a $300 24-70
    or http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=419910 for a $300 17-55 with Hoya CP (which I need)

I am not too concerned with range, as more with quality for price.

I am looking into getting the xti body, and buying better lens than the 18-55. I want a wide angle because most of my pictures will be landscape. Its purely a want.

^ the 28-105 is a great lens for the $$, its moderately fast and takes some great shots. Should be <$200 for a GC used copy. Also, look for the 28-135 IS, there are usually plenty fs as they are the kit lens for the 30D and 40D. BN copies usually sell around $300. it gives you a little more zoom and has IS which is nice for handheld. For WA, as Ben said above, the sigma is a great WA lens for a fraction of the cost.

jjswee, that second one, are you looking at the 24-700 EX DG?
I had that lens for ~2 years. While it's AF isn't very fast, it's accurate and an awesome lens. Optically it's too close to the L to even justify the L on IQ alone. You have to need the AF, weather sealing or really like the better contrast/saturation with the L to pony up the difference. I rocked the EX DG on my 1DmII the entire time I had it and it was great. When I went to the 5D it's AF is slower, so to make it work for me I upgraded the lens when I downgraded the body AF wise...

But for ~$300 the EX DG is a kick ass lens. f/2.8 consistent zoom > longer reach. If you can afford it buy it.

Like Ben mentioned, the Sigma 10-20 is nice and fairly comparable. I haven't shot a ton with it yet but I like it a lot. Here's 2 samples from mine:

Personally I would have a hard time choosing between the 2... If the sigma is all that's in your budget, get it and don't look back. If you've got the $ for the canon, consider what else you could spend that $140 on... Both are fantastic, and I honestly wonder if I'd have a 5D right now if I was starting from scratch and could go with one of these and a 40D....

My thought was that the extra $140 on the sigma, plus money I'll save with the sigma 70-200 f/2.8 vs. canon would get me an extra lens or other stuff. Once I realize/feel the lens is holding me back I can re-sell for not much of a loss and upgrade.

The Tokina's good, but I didn't like it as much because: a) it doesn't go as wide, and b) you have to flip a switch to get MF, whereas the Sigma is like AF-S Nikon lenses with MF override.... but other than those things, it's a nice, solid-feeling lens.

my only been with the tokina 12-24mm, is that it's tough to get it over the sigma version. Yes the tokina is a better lens of 1.6/1.5, but the sigma works up to FF... So if you think you're going upgrade, the sigma is nice, if you think you're going to stay, 10mm is a lot wider than 12... That said, the tokina is very nice, has constant F4 and a wonderful build quality....

Ben, I think you are thinking of YOUR sigma, the 12-24 DG... the sigma that we've been talking about, though, is the crop-body specific Sigma 10-20 DC that I have.... at least I think that's what we've been talking about...

    Yes and no.
The OP is talking about the 10-20mm and or the 10-22mm. Then Damon brought up the tokina 12-24mm. I'm now saying to not forget the sigma 12-24mm if you're going to consider the tokina 12-24mm because the sigma can go to FF. And if you're planning an upgrade, then get the sigma 12-24mm (or a 10-2x and plan to sell it when you go FF) because it's not a DC/EF-S... If you're planning on staying on a crop, then get the 10-2x...

So in the mix in my posts are:
    Canon 10-22 EF-S
    Sigma 10-20mm EX DC
    Tokina 12-24mm f4
    Sigma 12-24mm EX DG

Gotcha--I thought that might be where you were going, but I kind of lost your train of thought. Someone not familiar with all the options might have a hard time following it, too (your train of thought).

To the interested parties--the Sigma 12-24 is ~$200 more than the Sigma 10-20, but it will, indeed, work on both a crop sensor and a FF sensor. And, it is a HUGE lens.
