Default  Why make DIY Gridspots for hotshoe flashes?

this guy sells a 4 pack of honeycomb grids, 20,30,40,50 degree pack for $11 shipped.
    http://www.saxonpc.com/honeycomb-cel...otography.html

You can order them in foam holders, but I figure I will use those mini bungees instead or make my own holders.

This is way nicer than DIY with black straws and you get variable beam sizes.

because DIY are close to free and you get that DIY sense of accomplishment

I do agree that these grid kits are one of the cheapest thing you can buy (not make) for strobist work, and they look great.

And you get varying degrees as if you bought large grids for studio heads.

Better still - he sells them with push-on foam shells already installed.

I got them, I cut them to the size of the end of an omni bounce, cut the end out and then i just slide the grid in the omni bounce and put it on the flash head. Works good.

I wish I had just bought them with the foam holders though.

Some are aluminum and some are plastic. Supposedly the plastic is heat rated at 200+ degrees.

And if anyone else wants to make their own... 1500 black straws for $23 after shipping (shipping costs more than the straws - wtf?). http://www.amazon.com/Collins-Straws...3587538&sr=8-1

I would rather go with a solution I knew could handle a high amount of heat. The straw thing is cool, but risky.

Not only that, but you are restricted to one beam size. By ordering the ones i linked to, you get various beam sizes, which is nice to have.

Not really, you just vary the length of the straws.

I thought it was the size of the holes? Based on what I received, since they are the same length and different hole sizes, I think this would be true.

you can vary the beam by length or size while keeping the other constant.

more length or more holes (smaller size) = more dark surface area = less refraction getting out

What French said. This is why the Saxon PC kit talks about "stacking". If you're space constrained, the Honl grids are probably nice since it's less space in your bag, etc.

My local shop just put out an email saying they now stock the Honl system. Gonna check it out this weekend, hopefully.

I picked up a Honl 1/8th inch grid this weekend (along with the Speed Gobo). Unfortunately someone had beaten me to the 1/4 inch grid.

    Here's a demonstration:

    50mm zoom on SB-900

    135mm zoom on SB-900

135mm zoom on SB-900 with 1/8th Honl grid

First impressions? Well made, but relatively heavy. With the amount of velcro I currently have on my SB-900 for gels, it doesn't attach very well. I'll probably add more velcro to the body of the SB-900, as well as velcro to the top/bottom sides of the grid itself.

looks nice, but I'm not a velcro fan. My snoot/grid are foam and fit over the head. And I use a rubber band to hold my gels.

One of the other things I noticed is that the protrusions on both the SB-900 and SB-600 make laying the grid directly against the flash very awkward. I'm going to pick up some speed straps and see it works out better - they allow you to keep the grid away from the element a bit so the protrusions don't **** up the grid.
