Default  How much to charge for a group photo shoot?

    Bump

    Congrats Ted!

Not to steal Ted's thread but since this one is already going...

I'm shooting group shots for some clients of a client at an event. Her email:

    James,

On Thursday, Feb 7th at 11:30AM we need a photographer at ******* to do some group shots. I'll then request a disk and ask you to order prints (color) to send to clients post event.

How much would you charge for this service w/out the prints included since I'm not sure what I want yet?

I'm charging them $75/hour and it probably won't take longer than one. I haven't emailed her back yet but I'm assuming she wants the disc to look over the photos to see which ones to purchase since she wants me to do the ordering.

Since I don't have an account on SmugMug or the like and local pro labs here charge a LOT, who do you others shop your work out to? Is mpix good for stuff like this?

The only shoots I have done were for friends and family so I just made their prints at Wolf, Walgreens, or Sam's and gave them to them. Because this is a paid job I don't want those stores names on them!

Back to Ted right after these messages...actually, this post probably warrants a new thread. Move accordingly if you mods get the itch.

MPix does a good job for me and their prices are hard to beat. I wouldn't know the first thing about the rest of that though.

I think $75/hour is a good price for the shoot, but keep in mind the time for PP and travel time. Make it worth your while.

As far as the shoot, inside/outside? Do you have enough flash/lighting? Can you scout out the location in advance? How many people and can you arrange them nicely without risers/stairs? Do you have enough range in your lenses to get everyone in the shot? Just things to think about.

As far as prints, I would charge for that too as prints are much more valuable from a photographer than a disc of images. Maybe a package deal depending on sizes/quantities? Make sure the proofs you give her are watermarked and the standard 800xwhatever size.

MPix does do a great job. You could have them delivered to your house and then hand deliver them to the client so that you are more involved and there is still mystery in the process.

Also should have mentioned, this company is a client of ours that we are building a new website for and they are spending quite a bit of $$$ on the development. It's also the company that my wife works for so I'm not worried about this lady taking my images and printing them herself to cut costs. She will get small files, though.

I do plan on charging more for the prints than what I pay for them. Hand delivering them won't be an option for their clients as most of them do not live here. That's where a service like mpix would come in handy since I can ship to others after the company sends me a payment.

I did forget to take into account the travel time (it's going to be about 1 1/2 hours round trip) and the PP time. Thanks!

I can go and scout out the location for sure. Be a nice little trip out to the lake anyway. Unfortunately the shoot is at 11:30am with overhead sun and being that the location is at the lake I'm sure they will want it shot outside. I need to get some reflectors. My lenses should work just fine but knowing the # of people and how many in each group shot will be good.

Thanks for all the advice so far!

So they can afford to pay you what you're worth and for all the hassles involved.

Keep in mind that Mpix charges ~$5 per order to ship and it's going to be a pain to setup individual shipping addresses for more than a handful of people. Their printing, however, is relatively cheap and of great quality.

@ overhead sun in February. It's going to be raining, silly!

And I'm not sure how effective reflectors are going to be for such a large crowd. They work great for individuals when you can get up close and personal, but at the distance they'd have to be at to be out of a group shot they're not going to help much. You may be better off using fill flashes to throw a lot of light. If you have to rent gear be sure to take that in consideration.
