Default  Sometimes, It's not what you know.....

    It's who you know.
Through a couple of my close friend's who are in the Mortgage game, I met 2 co-owners of a brokerage. They moved into a 3-4000SQ/FT space with bare walls.
Their wives purchased a couple small prints last summer from me and they also liked what they saw. I just got the OK to put together 12 matted and framed 20x30 prints for their new office.
Needless to say, I am pretty stoked on the deal.

On another note, I am putting up a selection of framed prints in a Starbucks in a suburb of Minneapolis. I am thinking my work should sell well in that location.

I hope this is an indication of things to come this year.

Wow, congrats, Shawn. You mind sharing what you're pricing the 20x30s at?

    Good luck with it all.

In this case, it is much, much less than usual. I have become friend's with these guys over the past few years and based upon what they were looking to spend I came up with a solution for them

Nielson -Profile 11 black metal frame @ 26x36 $20 each
    26x36 - Single white Mat - $9.00
    26x36 1/8'' crystal clear plexi - $12.00
    26x36 Archival Foamcore backing board - $9.00
    20x30 print from WHCC.com - $25
Total cost out of my pocket - $75 each.
Also, there are misc expenses such as archival mounting tape, wire, etc...

All of the above are based on ordering 10 or more of everything at a time where I get a 10% discount.

I am selling them to them for $225 each.

Generally I want at least 5 inches of Mat all the way around the print, real glass and usually double matted to color match the print, but I had to sacrifice to meet their wants and needs.

    www.documounts.com for the framing supplies.

A lot of photogs will charge $600-$1000+ for a 20x30 print, Single white mat and frame.

Nice, thanks for the breakdown. The key is you're getting paid and both sides are happy with the agreement. I mean, that's still like $1200 profit, right?

Absolutely. Just a matted/signed 20x30 print of mine would be around $300. Framed it would probably be 400-500. I've only sold (1) 20x30 print though to date mostly due to lack of resolution.

If you don't mind me asking, what camera/megapixel are these 20x30s coming from?

I'd love to see a shot of one of them finished.

    Thanks Guys.

Some were taken with a Pentax *ist DL 6mp and most were taken with a K10d 10mp.

I am not worried about the 6mp files holding up for that size.

P.S.The 20x30's from my old 6mp DSLR looked great.

Seeing your work printed and framed is something else. I really don't want to deliver these, but I have to. I am delivering them tomorrow.

I am also hanging the Starbucks prints tomorrow. Pricing on those will be more, Probably around $450-$550 for the 20x30 framed print. I came up with a price list at work today, but I left it there.

    Thanks Jay,
It has been a trip for sure. I have multiple cuts on both hands from handling the glass, I stabbed my pointer finger almost to the bone with an exacto knife, managed to cut my palm without knowing it on glass and while signing a mat I left a huge puddle of blood on it. Needless to say I bought another mat.
This has been a learning process for sure.

I feel like I should post a write up on the framing process to explain tips I have learned.

Oh yes, a writeup would be nice. That's one of those areas I've never really had a step-by-step thing showing what others do. Oh, and congrats on the sale! That's awesome!
