Default  More Good News (Got an article!)

Looks like the same magazine that published my other shot recently wants to do a (short) article about me for their upcoming issue which, I believe, will be around April. From the loose details I've heard so far, the story will consist of around 500 words of text, four of my shots with paragraphs about them and one of me "in the field". The feature is called "Master in the Making" and it will have my age listed along with it.

Anyways, I had to write an "around 200 word" Artist Statement describing why I do what I do for the article. I'm sharing that here with you guys to be sure I don't sound like an idiot.

I'm by no means a professional writer. I pretty much sat down, thought about why I do what I do, and knocked this out. It may not be great, but I think a lot of truth comes through in it. I'm pretty dedicated to what I do.

I'd love to hear any input, but please don't be too rough.

In my mind, the environment is something for us to cherish, to revere, to enjoy, and most of all, to conserve. Several years ago, I picked up a camera with the intention of taking beautiful photographs of the places I was so passionate about and sharing them with those around me. Today I have more experience, better equipment, and a wider audience, but that simplistic goal still holds true.

I’ve seen some incredible moments out there—moments that are impossible to describe to someone that wasn’t witnessing it next to me. A photograph is a way for me to connect someone to the beauty that I find. Most of my favorite experiences are from my time in the field and I have too many stories to mention. I never tire of searching for that next perfect moment with my camera. That anticipation of witnessing something truly special will always drive me. With so much wilderness in the world, I’ll never tire of exploring it. Simply put, I love what I do.

I spend a vast amount of my time in the field experiencing, studying and most of all enjoying the areas that we still have. In today’s fast-paced society of growth and expansion, the wilderness is always on the losing side of the equation. I want people to see my photographs and remember the world around them. I want to move them to care about and conserve the wild landscape before it’s too late.
The paragraphs are indented and not spaced in the real version, but vBulletin was giving me some formatting issues.

    Thanks.

    sounds a lot better than:

I shoot **** because it looks good and no one else gets up that early!

Sounds good to me, but I'm on my third pint (case of pints for $13 today) so take it for what it's worth.
    I own this joint!

yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift, that's why it's called the present.

Thanks, Ben. I like it because it's honest. When I sat down to explain why I shoot what I shoot, that's what I wrote... take it or leave it type thing.

I was on my 5th or 6th beer when I wrote that, 7 or 8 now...

Congrats Scott! And nice paragraphs! Even if you don't get paid too much from the magazine itself, you'll probably get some print orders from readers of said magazine.

Your statement conveys your mission effectively, it's a great insight to your mind. Congrats on the article, and I'd agree that you are a master in the making.

*wipes forehead* I was hoping you'd read it. Thanks for the input, Ted. And, if you think it sounds pretty good, it must be okay. I'll probably send it on to the editor sometime today.
