    Default  My Magazine Feature

I just got a good email, the editor sent me the layout of my magazine feature for me to proof it. Anyways, even though I probably shouldn't show it off until it's published, they didn't tell me not to.

Here it is... (note: the black space on top and bottom are only there because I was doing the "full-page" view in Adobe Reader. The actual pages are the white space and text)

Overall, I'm pretty ****ing pumped. I think it looks awesome.

Thanks, guys. Definitely the biggest deal I've had in my photo career so far. I can't wait to see the actual issue.

I only wish I had a less douche-bag looking picture for the shot of me. They wanted one of me in the field with a camera, but the only ones I have like that are in boring places. It was also short notice so I didn't have much time to ask around with all the people I've shot with. So I just sent them a few self portraits and told them it's hard to shoot yourself with a camera when you're alone in the backcountry using your only body (with you) to take the self portrait.

I'm the most excited that while they selected the shots they wanted to use for the feature from my website, they picked 4 of my absolute favorites. Usually people seem to want prints and to publish the shots that I'm not overly fond of, not this time.

    Nature's Best Photography for Kids

It's a secondary publication to Nature's Best Photography magazine. It looks like Scott will be in the premiere edition.

    Thanks, everyone.

And, this will be the second issue. I also had a shot in the first issue and the magazine as a whole, really is pretty damn nice.

It's obviously nothing too major, but definitely a step in the right direction for me and my future in nature photography.

Did they misspell your name in that intro? (first photo) ... Looks like "Hotling", but admittedly it's tough to tell at this resolution.

    Congrats, Scott.

Good eye. It is misspelled, there were a few small typos and such that I told them about, that was one of them. Should be fixed in the real issue.

Thanks for pointing it out though, I would hate to miss something that could be easily fixed like that.

do you revisit these areas again and again to get good lighting?
I always end up visiting amazing places, and it looks like garbage cause the light wont behave, but when you have 2 days to do San Fransisco, I cant really spend it waiting for one shot of the bridge with good lighting..
Or is it luck / timing / ps?

Sorry I missed your post until just now...

Anyways, yes, I go back numerous times for the landscape images until the lighting fits what I have in mind or works in another way. I think part of your problem with garbage light is getting out at the wrong times. Usually, even on family trips and things, I get out before sunrise to shoot because most people don't get up that early on vacation and I can still get some time in to shoot during some good light.

But to add to that and answer your last comment... yes, there is an element of luck involved, there's DEFINITELY an element of timing, there's compositional knowledge, and technical knowledge. There is NOT an element of Photoshop knowledge involved.

I agree with that, I do the same on family trips.

I disagree, if you didn't know how to adjust curves, contrast, sharpen, etc... your images wouldn't look the same. I understand you don't make your images illustrations with your PP, but PS is a key ingredient to your photography although not the most important.

It is. But that's not what he meant or at least not how I interpreted it. Yes, I use Photoshop. No, Photoshop is nowhere NEAR as important as luck, timing, light, etc. It's a finishing touch at most.
