Default  Maybe the best news yet...

Got an email yesterday that might be the best news of my relatively short photographic career to date...

It looks like I'll have a full-page image in the May 2008 issue of Our State magazine (www.ourstate.com). It'll be part of a photo essay entitled "Beach Scenes". This is definitely the largest publication (by far!) that I'll have ever had anything published in. And hopefully, it'll be a foot in the door to get more stuff published with them in the future...

    So, yeah...

And by the way, I have no idea which shot it is, the email simply asked for an invoice billing them for one image at full-page size at their pay scale. I sent a submission of 20-25 for the feature.

Wait, that story on you isn't in a bigger mag?
and what's their pay scale work out to be?
    I own this joint!

yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift, that's why it's called the present.

Nah, the story is in a magazine about 1/100 the size. Seriously, Our State is probably the biggest magazine in North Carolina. Website says they have "over 150,000 subscribers".

Pay was $225 for full-page, one-time rights. Nothing crazy, but certainly a nice check and step in the right direction.

Perhaps the best part is being able to put this on my resume. Pretty good notch in the proverbial belt.

Dude, that's awesome. That money will support a "poor college guy" for a loooong time. Having 150k readers see a shot will sell prints, and hell yes it's great for the resume. Great work!

Exactly, my first thought was $225? I can get to Colorado on that with some money to buy a couple nice (subway) meals! Hell yes!

And yeah, that's 150k of subscribers, who knows how many people will actually see it. It won't be anything too great though, I mostly submitted my non-keeper type shots.

    Yes, congrats.

Scott, now that you have a nice resume, have you considered submitting some work to the better known galleries in your area?
This is a great way to get your name out there as well. Plus it is kick ass to say you are in a gallery.

Yeah, I've actually had a couple contact me. Problem is, it's just so much damn work to have stuff up permanently. I'll do it eventually or look more into it at least, it's just from what I can tell. They want me to mat/prepare all my own stuff THEN charge me 40-50% commission on everything that sell.

I've talked recently to the NC Museum of Natural Science here in Raleigh and they seemed fairly adamant about wanting me to submit a portfolio for their "gallery review board" for a show sometime in the next year or two.

Basically, I'm just lazy. I need to work harder at this stuff.
