Default  Breaking into Commercial Photography article

    Just caught this...

    http://www.photographybay.com/2008/0...e-photography/

I became aware of the author a few years ago on a few fly-fishing forums, when he seemed to be starting to produce a fairly actively updated website ~2005. http://www.itinerantangler.com/about.htm
In a few years, his stuff has now appeared in a number of big name fishing magazines.

Just thought there might be a few people who'd find this interesting - that is the slight bias towards delivering a product (in a timely and businesslike manner) rather than focusing upon the perfect picture.

commercial/professional photography means whoring yourself to your customer.

if they're happy, then you're successful. it's got very little to do with art.

if you can't palate that thought, then don't quit your day job!

Agreed! I just thought it was interesting seeing someone who has turned their love of a sport into a profitable side venture over an approximate 5-year window. Some of us joke about side work paying for new gear - how about side work paying for exotic travel and new gear? Sounds like a win-win

^ I don't know that many of us are joking... I would certainly do more to try to make some money--not a full-time sort of thing--if I had time and I wasn't really focused on my fulltime job right now. Still, I am trying to get some things in motion.

We would all love to be able to subsidize our habit, for sure. Profit would be gravy.

Maybe one day I'll be good enough to at least subsidize my habit.

That's essentially my goal. My landscape and nature photography paying for my travel, gear, and some on top. While I'm nowhere near that yet, I will make a 4-digit profit from photography in 2008 which is a damn good start in my opinion, especially considering the time frame. I'm pretty confident I can have a decent, steady income from photography by 2010.
