    Default  Pricing Question

An old friend of mine (elementary school guidance counselor) wants to contract me to take a shot of him to be the cover of his upcoming book. The shot will be him with one of the local waterfalls in the area. We're going to shoot two separate ones on two consecutive mornings and I'm estimating it'll be about 8 hours work all said and done.

2-3 hours of driving around and 4-5 hours of hiking and shooting. Should actually be a lot of fun.

Any idea what in the hell to charge for this? I'd like to cut him a bit of a deal since he's been a pretty influential person in my life (hell, I'd do it for lunch and gas money) but I also need to get paid for my work. Keep in mind, it's not a large scale book, but a book nonetheless. I'll receive photo credits and a couple copies in with the deal, obviously. Another shot of mine may also be used as the back cover.

Please just throw out a number, I don't have any idea.

    I'm thinking right now...

    8 hours of work @ $25/hr (expenses like gas included) = $200
Then, to publish the shot, another $100-200.

So, I'm at around $300-400 right now.

If it's a book cover you could charge much more. Who's the publisher? How many copies are in the first run?

Yeah, but it will be a small run, I'm fairly sure of that. But maybe I should get in touch with the editors or something. Thanks, James.

Definitely find out how many are in the first run so you can get an idea of what to charge a client, then adjust it down to give your friend a deal. If the publishers are paying for it as part of the cost of printing the book then charge them full price.

Also, make sure that there is something written up that states any runs after the first you get paid for that, too.

Will do. Thanks. I've never messed with this side of photography.

It can be very lucrative, especially if you get referrals from the publisher to shoot other covers, and it will surely drive traffic to your site for print sales.

Would've been better if you were like:

"So I'm at around $349-351 right now."
