    Default  Summer plans

    Hi folks,
I've been waiting to really post some info about this until I was sure, but I got the call this afternoon: I've got a job this summer. It's not specifically photography related, but I'll be working in Yellowstone National Park. Gonna start after Memorial day. Not the best pay in the world, but it'll be more fun than some maintenance worker. I don't really know the specifics of what I'll be doing, but I do know it'll be outside every day, some weed control, and maybe some wildlife and plant surveys and such. I get weekends off and will be earning a little vacation time. I'm pumped. So now I gotta get me a car and prep for a rather lengthy drive. Woot!

That sounds awesome. Just so you know, NSOP rules clearly state that you will be required to post a pic every day you're in Yellowstone.

Awesome!!! you'll defiantely see a TON of wildlife. My brother-in-law worked out there for a summer, then moved to Jackson Hole for 2 years.

I can't wait to see all the pics!

I also love your avatar. I have a shot of a similar subject

JELLYSTONE!!!! Make sure to make ton's of Ranger and Yogi jokes all the time while you're there. The rangers LOVE it and they NEVER get old.

Seriously though, if you want to do some BC camping there, I know one KILLER site in the SW corner.

Good Luck, take lots of pics, and have fun!!!

Ah, thank goodness, Reed. I didn't want to say it, but I was afraid **** wouldn't work out for you. I'm glad it did, and I'm jealous as hell. Despite having a job myself... just for me, make sure you spend a ton of time in the Lamar Valley, it's one of the coolest places on earth.

What days do you start/end? And, you're driving out there, right? I expect to see tons of Teton shots at some point when you're not working on the weekends and the Hayden Valley is a sweet landscape spot (in my opinion), I just never got the light while I was there to take advantage of it.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I was pretty freaking worried this summer was gonna be another stay at home summer, but then magic happened. But yeah, I plan to have about 11 weekends free, maybe a 3-day weekend or two.

But yeah, gonna be buying a car in a week or so (probably an 07 Civic..... :hides from the subie peoples: ) then I'm gonna drive up, probably leaving on the 21st or 22nd of May. I'm hoping to be able to drive up and spend nights at parks. Sorry Scott, but me sleeping in a civic would be tight... I'm just a little worried about getting to the parks as I know some close at sundown, but that kills lots of driving time. But yeah, gonna get a mid-size backpacking pack for some day hikes with camera gear. I kind of want to get more camping gear and be able to spend some nights out in the park, but that would involve getting amping permits and buying some more gear, that would get pricey. Any thoughts?

Haha, that sounds pretty fun. Yeah, I should be getting to know some folks pretty well. Oh yeah, I'll be working in the Canyon Village area of the park.

I bet you can snag on permits you want once you work there. I've already bee told I can do about anything I want permit-wise in Olympic with no trouble.

As for sleeping in the parks, I don't get what you're saying... you you plan on staying in the parks or not? Just pack a small tent and camp, I do that whenever it's nice out.

And, as for parks closing, which ones are you talking about? NO national parks close at sunset, but the occasional entrace (east Yellowstone) does close at times after certain times. You absolutely have to at least hit Rocky Mountain NP, it's pretty much completely in your way and Trail Ridge Road might be open by then... it's the highest road (I think) in North America and very cool.

If you need any info on any of the parks, call me. I've been to about all of them you'll be near and driving through.

Thanks Scott. Yeah, I was planning on camping in the parks. I guess I was getting my info about park entrances from Eno River State park which closes are sundown. Alright, so I did some looking, and here's what I'm thinking: home to Ozark NP, then maybe to Rocky Mountain NP (15 hour drive cause there's no national parks between there that allow camping) then from there onto Yellowstone. 3 days..., haha. Thoughts?

Unless maybe I hit up some Kansas state parks for a night to break up that long drive. Hmmm

I bought an 06 Civic on Saturday and will be getting my final stuff together this week and leaving Next Tuesday. I think I've got some stuff narrowed down about where I will be staying. So I'm thinking of going from home to Sam A Baker State Park in Missouri, to Cedar Bluff State Park in Kansas, to Rocky Mountain National Park, finally to Yellowstone NP. On the way back, I'm going from Yellowstone to Badlands National Park in South Dakota, to Lake McBride State Park in Iowa, to Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky, and finally home.

Today I was walking through Books-A-Million today and saw a guide book to the national parks in the US published by National Geographic so I made a little impulse buy and I am really enjoying it. Some good information in it.

I finally figured out some stuff with my job. I'm gonna have Friday-Sunday off every week, working 10-hour days on Monday-Thursday. I'll have to adjust to the mornings and long hours, but I think it will definitely be worth it.

Good luck, Reed. Call me if you need anything. I can report on RMNP tomorrow.

Damn, man, you already got to a stopping place? Nice.

Oh, here's a link to the google map. I don't really have all the specific locations within the parks nailed down yet, but it's the general idea.

Wassup folks! My weekend is coming to an end and I'm wondering what my next week of work will be. The available internet here sucks hard, so I won't be posting any pictures til the fall. It's about the speed of dialup...

Anyhow, this place freaking rocks. There's still a fair bit of snow on the ground, though it's starting to melt away now. As I had hoped, lots of my job will be outdoors, though some will be dealing with the public pretty intensely. Yesterday and the day before I hiked a total of 16 miles, which is not bad considering how sedentary I am. I'll check in when I get the chance.

Hi all. I made it back alive with all 6 fingers. I just bought a new computer and monitor (ordered about a week ago), so I'll be having an editing spree when that arrives. Now I'm back in school (actually waiting for a class to start) and it is not fun not having the great outdoors to go play in. What an amazing summer.
    Cheers,
    Reed
