Default  Putting together a portfolio - need advice

I think I've reached that point in my life where I'm sick and tired of the IT industry, and I'm looking for something else to do. While I don't expect it to ever work out as a photographer, what would you guys suggest as far as putting together a basic portfolio to show off? What type of variety of shots, how many shots, what size prints, etc. School a n00b

Tomorrow night I'm going to get together with my neighbor to do some shots of his old Ford Coupe in exchange for prints. It will at least be a way to get a damn nice car to shoot during "the golden hour", and I can give him some prints to frame or keep with the car for all the shows he attends in exchange for his time.

I print 12x18 prints and have them in a 13x19 book. I actually print them at 13x19 so they have a nice white border on the print... I have a Itoya portfolio that's basic black with clear inserts with black paper in them. Works pretty well.

The saying goes those that can't do it in B+W do it in color, those that can't do it in color do it REALLY BIG IN COLOR. Big color prints impress people. Anyone can do an 8x10 at walmart, so make sure you go beyond that and put some effort into it. It will impress whoever you show it to. Also be sure to have a business card to go with it... A PERSONAL business card for you as a photographer.

    Good advice from Ben.

Also, consider making more than one portfolio. A bride won't be adequately impressed with your wildlife or architectural photography, and an architect probably won't care for your shots of a wedding bouquet, so tailor accordingly.

I'm in this same boat, I need to nail down a real, hard portfolio for galleries and such.

I'd rather blow my brains out than shoot another wedding! :barf: Thanks for the advice though

Dad is a real estate agent, so I've already told him the next time he has a house to list, I'd like to go with him and take some pictures just so I can have that too.

I need to finish mine actually... I have the book. I have some prints, but I need to sit down and order enough prints to fill it.

Sooo... I'm a little unsure about how you feel

I was just using that as an example, to really say that you should target your prospective clients with relevant work... which it sounds like you got from my post
