Making An Invoice?
|
|
|

|
I just sold some post cards to a local shop, but they require an invoice before money can change hands (obviously, that seems reasonable to me
). Anyways, I've never made an invoice, what should I put on it?
Something like...
---------------------------
INVOICE: 10/25/2007
ATTN: Julie XXXXX
Place of Business
Postcards: 50 @ $.25/ea = $12.50
Scott Hotaling
Address
Phone Number
---------------------------
Would the be reasonable? I'm not sure on the order or even what to put on it... it doesn't need to be formal, but I'd for it to look at least semi-professional...
Thanks guys!

Do a goog search on invoice templates ... pick one you like, copy, add your own logo, print ... it makes a HUGE difference in the long run if you make them look professional (use a company name/logo).

Actually, now you've got me thinking biz ... being a college student, you probably haven't done much small business stuff. Let me give you a few tidbits of wisdom I've picked up along the entrepreneurial road.
Most important: form an official company! buying a url and running a biz under it means nothing to the gov't. If you do well and build a name for yourself, somebody else could trademark the name and take the url from you. There is precedence for this in US courts. If, however, you form an official company (and don't bother to trademark the name), you will win a court battle for trademark rights because you can demonstrate official biz under that name at an earlier date than the other guy. This may sound paranoid, but trust me ... it's the way to go. And you can do it for free (or super cheap). Just go to your local city hall and fill out a form for a Sole Proprietorship. That's all you gotta do. Your taxes won't change, there's no other steps. It just makes it offical that you're working under that name. (btw, you typically do not have to do this if you are doing biz under your birth name, but I'd still fill out the paperwork ... there might be another "John Smith" out there) Later on, once biz develops, it's very easy to convert to an LLC or sub-chapter S corp.
Second most important: Put your name/logo on everything. Make sure that url is on biz cards, invoices, checks, anything ... and everything. You'll be amazed where business comes from.
Lastly, I'd recommend getting/using a permanent address for the "company." Most people just grab a UPS Store box ... this cost $ though so lots of people don't bother until profits start rolling in. It's not a huge deal, as long as you try to do biz with your url more than a mailing address, but you'll be surprised in 5 years when stuff gets forwarded to you from the old address ... somebody sees some of the first work you did and the address has changed ... again, not a big deal, but something to be avoided if possible.
Alright, that's my 2 cents for the moment. I'm heading out to scope new photo locations

Thanks! Those are all great points, I'm not used to the business side of things... I can take the pictures all day, but yeah, I flop when it comes to simple stuff...
But basically, I don't have time to do a really nice invoice right now, I just want something quick that works for records as I'd like to have the cards for sale in the store by the end of business today. I can make a nice invoice once I'm rich and she orders another 50 for $12.50...

Actually, nevermind, that "google a template" worked really well... I made a pretty professional looking one in 5 minutes and its on the way now.
Thanks!
