    Default  Alaska Summer 2009 Anyone?

So, I mentioned this in another thread and here's the idea.

My wife and I would be up for hosting a few people from this board this summer if anyone want's to come up. We've done this with Scuba divers in the past and it turns out to be a lot of fun. she's actually more interested in this than the divers since it involves hiking!

I'm thinking sometime in late July early August would be best.

So if we work it out, you get yourselves here, I have 2 spare bedrooms so all I would expect is help covering expenses (food, boat fuel, etc.)

I would expect that this would be a week (or so) of day hikes, boating to shoot whales, bears, bald eagles, sea lions, and other life and maybe a side trip who knows, I'm open. For scenery, we have mountains, glaciers, rivers streams, waterfalls, etc.

Bunking situation would be this - 1 room double bed, 1-room 2 twins, plus space in the living room for someone to take an air mattress.

Basically I'll move my sons (7 and 12) upstairs and you guys get the first floor of the house.

What do I get? an excuse to take some time off work, hang with some of you guys and maybe learn some tricks to better my photo skills.

Kids are OK to bring as well, they just need to be up to hiking. Boat space is limited so we'll have to see how that might work. I may have other boat options.

To get here, you have to fly to Juneau on Alaska Airlines through Seattle.

Ben has first dibs since it's his board, I don't know if he's interested but beyond that we have space if anyone is interested.

    DM

dude!!! Yeah, sorry for not getting back to you on this yet, but it's been busy around the house and I didn't read the PM until this morning. Basically, we're out unless it can be the week the 4th of July is in because that's my mandatory vacation week.

Also, I'm not sure if we could swing 3x the airfair this year, but this is definately something I want to do... Just not sure if it'll work out for 2009. I can only image how rad AK is, but to get to have a local tour would make it even more special. I wonder if I'd like diving up there? (I've only ever been in <80º water ONCE and that was to find a lost lobster pot )

I'm not sure I can swing that week, I'm supposed to become an uncle around that time.

You'd like diving here! I could give you your drysuit cert while you're here.

BTW under 2 y/o flys free.

yeah, only if it's in your lap though, and right now at least Elias WILL NOT sit in a lap for more than 5 minutes. We're flying to SLC the first week in march though so I'll report back then. And yeah, I just priced tickets.... The cheapest tickets are $1,100 each with taxes.

dry suit cert sounds rad though. What do you guys see there in terms of sea life?

ahhhh!!!!! me and my friend andrew REALLLYYY want to drive up to alaska from the east coast over the summer. except we are hoping to be back by the end of july.

if we start driving in say the middle of june we'd be there around the beginning of july... idk if that would work for you. we really weren't planning on getting any hotel rooms anywhere but just camping

maybe a few days at your house and some photo safari's would work out great!
such a nice offer of you!!

I get $882 from Boston on Alaskaair.com That's the best place to look since they have the monopoly on getting to Juneau.

    Sea life:
    Huge Sea Lions
    ling cod
    octopus
    Nudibranchs
    Rockfish,
    Crab,
etc, etc - I'm more of a wreck diver myself but we do have some cool sea life.

Yes, on the wrecks, we have some really great ones! Just gained a new one in the last few weeks, I was the first one on it!

Josh- Might work - Juneau is a detour if you are driving but it might work. Either way, the drive up the ALCAN is incredible!

Stoopid - $775 from Newark Round trip.

You can't drive to Juneau! Fly or Float only, there's no road.

You could drive 2-3 days from Seattle to Skagway, Alaska and then ride the ferry 70 miles to Juneau but that would cost more than flying.

Ugh, the ferry is so boring! It's OK for 4-6 hours but more than that and you are pulling your hair out. They are very utilitarian and there is nothing to do on them. 3 days from Bellingham, WA to Juneau.

Not to mention that it is more expensive than a cruise ship! Especially if you have a car.

$1900 for 2 people, a cabin and a car less than 19' long. Meals not included.

    buff!

but yeah, I wouldn't do it on a short trip, but I want to spend a month or three getting up and back, so the ferry would be a nice relaxing portion of the trip I hope....

plus, we loved the ferries in Canada:

    Wow, what an offer!

I've been trying to get my wife to head up to alaska seriously this summer already. I went when I was 13, took the ferry from WA up/back and visited friends in Skagway and Juneau, and went to other areas of the panhandle.

It was fun up there, we visited my dad's best man from his wedding, and did some halibut fishing and other stuff like that.

I will talk this over with the wife. We have been pretty seriously thinking about it already and it may be fun to hang out for a day or two with you guys. We don't do scuba (not that we wouldn't, we just aren't into it yet), so we'd be up for hikes for sure.

    Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Fajita Ted and I can ride our motorcycles up there! (I doubt I could get enough time off work in a row to go though)

You could practically put an Alaska ferry on the car deck of those ferries. Ours are much smaller.

OK so tomorrow we'll create an initial list and then over time we'll figure our who can really make it and firm up the dates.

    Here's some teasers

Couple off my boat last summer

The Glacier is 5 minutes from my house then about an hour hike to get to the ice

    This is a Crevasse

your ferry shot looks almost identical in size to our first honestly, it's just the wide angle messing with it in my shot. And that's the ferry we were on for overnight w/o a cabin. (they were sold out 6 months ahead when we booked our reservation)

and your shots are making me want to come up just that much more.

It's easy turn south at Whitehorse, drive for 1.5 hours, catch a ferry for 2 or 6 hours depending on which one and you are in Juneau.

Technically, Juneau is on the mainland we just don't have a road.

Keep me posted, even if it's outside the timing of this thing we can probably work it out.

Ketchikan wanted the Bridge, Juneau gets the road to nowhere!

Currently in Ketchikan, you have to catch a ferry from town across the channel to the island to get to the airport. The want a bridge so they can drive across and not have to depend on the ferry. The problem is that even though it's a short hop across the channel, the bridge has to be tall enough to allow ships to pass under. And since it's a government project, the price is 4X what it should really cost.

Juneau on the other hand is split 50/50 on wanting a road vs. not wanting a road. It's been argued for 30 years+++ . The proposed route is through some very rough terrain and something like 25 avalanche zones. I'm on the fence, I would use it, but not to drive to America, it's too far. I'd just use it to get into the Yukon. Oh yea, cost estimates are around 300 Million to go 70 miles and we would still need a ferry to cross the last part.

Dude, it's so out of control, our newspaper has a blog after each article and letter to the editor. The mayor can stub his toe and someone blames it on us not having a road.

so if there are no roads, how do you get out of town for the weekend?

    In most cases you don't!

We have our boat and the summer we try to get out on it and camp.

Otherwise, we can take the ferry somewhere if the schedule fits, but it's pretty expensive. The family and the CRV costs about $500 RT to the nearest road.

My In-laws just bought a place (cabin) in a little town about 60-70 miles from here. We ferried over there for New Years, 4 hours each way and about $60 pp RT. I presume that my wife will want to spend several weekends there this summer. The problem is the ferry is on Thursday morning. When summer hits and we had good daylight I could make that run in my boat after work in just over 2 hours.

Otherwise, you take a jet to Seattle.
