I highly recommend that, though I won't be able to partake. I've spent a day (twice) with 2 semi-pro friends in Boston and they saved me months of experimenting. I'm a super beginner so having them around was like a massive brain transfer ... I learned a lot of technical basics immediately, like how to turn the damn thing on, what all the settings are and when to use them. They also taught me about equipment. I'd never seen a filter or polarizer before (hey, I said I'm new at this! ) Showed me remote flashes and a few lenses I might want. Hugely satisfying days that motivated me to go out and shoot.

I'm game. Something in early November (all my October weekends are booked) work? And where? I'll drive ~3 hours no problem each way.

    Maine even?

I'll bring everything I've got in the car so others can play/borrow crap for the day.

I'm way too far to take part: 5 1/2 hours to Boston. An hour past Acadia at the moment. (Peak colors right now!) But if I happen to schedule a biz meeting down there around the same time then I'd join the group.

    November 3rd or 4th?

Anywhere in NE is fine by me, Ill be in Boston with in-laws so Ill be pretty much central location to anywhere. Im a lighthouse addict, I know there are some really great ones in Maine that I have never seen. Any other ideas?

I keep meaning to drive out to the Quoddy lighthouse, that's about 45 minutes away. (That's the candy-striped one you see in all the Maine photos.)

Yeah, I'd be down for Maine for sure. I think I could even get the wife to come with (and not bitch about us stopping).

    Acadia?
And I'm pretty sure the Nov 3rd/4th works for me. I'll double check tonight with the boss.

Dallas to Austin (what I'd guess most of you would have to drive to get together, 195 miles):
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...=UTF8&z=7&om=1
    me to ME (354 miles):
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...91504&z=6&om=1

unless you're commenting on how far all you texans would have to go to find something worth shooting, then yeah, you've got a long ways to go... :P

Actually, the fall colors are supposed to be hitting Lost Maples State Park here in the next week or two. Could be fun, although the place will be overrun with touristy fall-leaf-o-philes getting in the way.

Whoa, that's an insane drive for you guys to come all the way up to Acadia, but if you do I'll sure as hell be there! IMO it wouldn't be worth it unless we knew a few key places to shoot ... might be better for you guys (and maybe me) to meet much more in the south and spend more time exploring on foot for good locations. Portsmouth, Kittery, Ogunquit, Portland?

I don't really know of anything cool that's relatively equidistant between Dallas, Austin and Houston, though. Somewhere near Austin is probably the best, I suppose.

I could be talked into another road trip out there. And we don't have to do our thing on the same weekend as the yanks, so if some time else works better with your schedules let everyone know.

me to Big Bend National Park
I could be talked into another road trip out there. And we don't have to do our thing on the same weekend as the yanks, so if some time else works better with your schedules let everyone know.
Google maps says that's about a 10 hour, 41 minute drive from my house, so that's probably out for me, unless it's an extended vacation type thing (3-5 days) and possibly carpool with someone else, too. Isn't Big Bend sort of near Copper Canyon in Mexico, though? I've seen some great pics from Copper Canyon.

Well, it's closer than your house is. From Big Bend it's less than an hour to Presidio over one of the best roads in the world. Cross there, then head to Chihuahua which takes about 4 hours. Then on to Creel, which is about another 4 hours. I think it's a little over 300 miles from the border to Creel, but traveling is much slower in Mexico.

If we were to do Copper Canyon, I would need about 2 weeks to get my fill.

So for the NE team. Who lives near (or know a lot about) Bar Harbor want to look into cheap places to stay? Looks like me and the wife will be coming. She said I need to make sure I get crap done around the house these next few weekends to be able to go (I have crap every weekend from now till then, except it's all one day things leaving the other day free). So I need to keep up with my chores/honey do list and I'll be good to go.

We're either coming up from noon on Saturday till noon Sunday or hopefully we could come up Friday night. But that will depend on room rates and other factors.
    I own this joint!
    gear list.
yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift, that's why it's called the present.
