Default  Traveling to Grand Rapids on Thursday...

and the high is supposed to be 29! My friend there said it was 16 today. So I'm preparing myself for a cold 4 days with the right clothing, etc., but what about my shooting? Here in Austin we don't get a chance to shoot snow much and the last time I was around that much snow was way before I started shooting seriously.

Any tips/tricks for shooting snow scenes and what I should prepare myself for? I know there are a bunch of Northerners here with some good advice.

Watch your exposure carefully--if the scene has a lot of white, your meter will underexpose to try to make it 18% gray. I would also say look for color within the snow--a blanket of whiteness is great when there is some wildly colorful detail to contrast with it.

Other than that, I don't have much to offer--we don't get much snow 'round these parts.

    Where's my damn locations forum?

I don't have anything to add, sorry, never spent much time in that area. But here's a free bump for others to see the thread.

As Mark said, watch your whites, its very easy to loose alot of detail with the right combo of sun and snow.

Wow, I'm sorry, I didn't even read the post... I thought you were simply asking about Grand Rapids tips.

Basically with snow, as Matt and Mark said, watch your highlights. If you can get a cloudy day, you're golden but if the sun is out you'll have a hard time. Make sure you understand and use your histogram, ignore your LCD for actually judging the exposure of the shot. Your histogram will reflect the true values much better.

Also, with snow, watch where you step... think about what you want to shoot before you enter a scene. Footsteps ruin snow shots. I go WAY out of my way to get away from footsteps. River scenes are AWESOME in the snow, but make sure you have a good composition, don't just get excited about the snow. Step back, slow down, and think. Don't be afraid to get in the water for a better composition, your feet won't freeze off and its only cold at first.

    Hope that helps some.

Thanks guys! Don't know if I'll be walking in any creeks unless my buddy has some snow boots I can borrow. Friggin' cold!

He's from GR so I'm going to have him take me out to some cool places to shoot. Last time I was there it wasn't snow season so this should be fun.

    Like Grand Rapids, Michigan?

I lived north of there for a summer in Big Rapids. Being from Austin you should go check out Lake Michigan, the shores are cool I think over there.

Yep, GR Michigan. The last time I visited my friend there we went out to Grand Haven to a restaurant on the shores of Lake Michigan. Very cool. Unfortunately I only had a 2.1MP p&s at the time but managed to get some decent pics.
