Default  film ir have the same look as digital ir?

So this may be an absolutely stupid question, but I don't. So does film ir give the same look? I was talking with a friend the other day about grabbing a used film body to try out ir since I am not at a point to have a digital body converted. She immediately informs me she has 3 Elan bodies and film rebel body and that I can use any of them whenever I want. She will probably just give me one of them. So I will probably give ir a try, have the film scanned as raw files and put on DVD, and edit in PS and LR.

Well, yes it has the same look.

But you only get that look from digital after you process and convert to b&w - straight out of camera things are red. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vic_acid/2857459713/)

Thanks guys. I knew about the digital conversion process. I have been researching it and have some good tutorials in my favorites folder. Thanks for the link, I'll add it to my faves list.

Or you can convert a camera for a few hundred bucks. http://www.lifepixel.com/IR.htm

^ yeah, but it's a few hundred PLUS a working digital body to start, so ~$500? A film body is ~$25 for a decent canon (A2 at KEH) then film. I'd go that route if you have working FF lenses (bobby does) and try it out before you spend a ton of money on it. If you get hooked and want the convenience of digital, THEN get a converted body.

I have film bodies available to use as much as I want. and a local place to develop, which is why I am going to try the film route.

    I realize it's expensive.

One super nice feature of a converted body is FAST shutter speeds.

Converting a digital camera definitely has advantages over shooting digital with a pass filter, but IR film doesn't require long exposures.

I must be thinking of using a screw on IR filter on a DSLR?

Yeah, the screw on filters cut out most visible light and just let IR through but then you're fighting the IR-cut filter over the sensor in the camera.
