    Default  Not a camera bag

This is about as 'not a camera bag' (aside from the stuff hanging off the sides) as you can get

My Tamrac Pro 5 fits in nicely in the main compartment plus I get the added space for the laptop, reflector and other bits in the back and the fron pocket. Unfortunately since it was a free conference bag it is not the most rugged, been through a couple already, luckily I was able to secure 4 of them.

This is what I had in there when my D200 was my main body

I actually have more in there now with the D700, extra EN-EL3 batt pack and AA batt pack. It's pretty packed.

I really wish they'd make their compact backpack with the insert/side zip from their DSLR sling... it'd be my perfect bag.

I need to get either the incase DSLR sling or the TT sling-o-matic and figure out how to put backpack straps onto it. Either of those would be perfect...
I have an TT sling-o coming in ~2 weeks, so we'll see what I can come up with using that metal bar...

    Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a small, on-the-fly camera bag, if that makes sense. I have a bulky Lowepro at home for travel but since I work in a less than savory area, I'd like something to keep my D90 in while I'm walking from work parking to the office and around the area. Something that I can keep on my hip and get my camera out of fast.

I was just at Samy's looking at Domke's and I did really like this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...pf_rd_i=507846

They had a cheaper version too that didn't have the wax finish but it did have a huge swath of very noisy velcro and that just wouldn't work for me.

So essentially I want something light, padded and comfortable that has ability to carry my camera and maybe 1 or 2 lenses yet doesn't look much like a camera bag. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I keep most of my gear in 2 Pelican 1560 cases

For daily bags I rotate between Kata Reporter (don't remember the model) a Lowepro Flipside 300 and a Lowepro Classified 140

About to put up for sale my Lowepro Compurover and Crumpler Brazzilion Dollar Home bag.

That's near-perfect. I don't mind not having a surplus of padding so that works. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the velcro and it is a tad on the large size.

    Thank you, though.

^ with the retro you can "silence" the velcro, but then the bag doesn't stay shut on it's own. You can also modify the amount of velcro that's in use. Also check out their UD series. Then the tamrac adventure 4 messenger. They also have a new line (can't remember the name) that's very similar but comes in black/gray.

I've been doing some more research and have narrowed it down to either the Think Tank UD 30, Think Tank Retro 10 or the Lowepro Top Loader 75.

I was browsing Youtube last night for video reviews and stumbled upon a great series of reviews for the Think Tank bags. It took me a minute, but I realized that they were actually Ben's reviews.

Those are great, by the way! Love that shore line set up. I think it was in your UD 10 video around the four minute mark when a seagull flies past you towards the camera. It just looked really cool!

^ , thanks man! Yeah, it's the retro video review with the gull... I'd recomend AGAINST the lowepro top loader. Or if you really like it PM JJswea as he bought my old one and it's too big for him.

Err, yeah, sorry I meant Retro 10. And thanks for the input regarding the Top Loader.

Now I just have to decide between the UD and the Retro. Will the UD 30 fit a D90 w/ battery grip and a 80-200 lens attached?

pretty sure it will. I had a UD30 for a while, but I'm not sure if it overlapped with my 100-400?

I know I did the review after I switched to nikon (and had shorter lenses). Check their page for the specs though...

i had looked at those before, I kind of liked the idea of those.

I don't see how it could be too big though.. I would think it would fit my rebel and 70-300 is usm pretty decently, or am I wrong in this?

yeah, that would fit, my only issue is with the shape of the bag and how it NEEDS to be laid on it's side or it tips over...

I just had to look this bag up. OMG, their video essentially says the same. "It's made to not look like a camera bag. (It's to look like a purse)..."It's stylish (like a purse)."..."It has a zipper to expand volume by 30% not necessarily for camera equipment, but for whatever you may need (so that you can use it AS your purse.) If I had a virginia, this would actually be an awesome everyday bag.

I actually need to start looking for a new bag because my Crumpler 3 Million Dollar Home is just small enough that it looks more like a man-purse, and it would be nice to carry even just another lens. I need something more messenger bag looking even if it's bigger than I need it to be.

I went down to Samy's Camera to check out some bags and luckily they had a Think Tank UD 30. I brought my Nikon along with the 80-200 attached and it fit perfectly.

They had a Retro 10 as well which was really nice but just a little too big for what I need.

Needless to say, I bought the UD 30!

anyone have some suggestions for something like the TT UD30 that isn't black?.... I rather hate black camera bags. I really could use a "carry a couple things around with me bag". Especially after this weekends event that I was at.. wow, yeah my bag is great for carrying everything that I do take with me but I also need one to put stuff in for when I'm at events. Something compact (couple of lenses, speed light, my syncs and maybe can strap a good compact stand/umbrella to) and that wont get in the way.

^ Look at some of the smaller Crumpler, Domke, Tamrac, or Tenba bags--they all have models that are not black.

The UD 30 is incredible. Right now I have all of my gear in there -- Nikon D90 w/50mm prime attached; 24mm prime; and my 80-200mm + various accessories (filters, lens pen, etc.) and I have room to spare. Plus, it's light and small.

I'll let you know if my opinion changes once I get my battery grip in the mail and on my camera. But as of right now, I love this bag!

I needed to go a bit bigger so I went and picked up a Retro 20 today. I don't think I'll be using the UD30 for anything other than a lens bag from now on.

that's my new mission though, as you know. Finding the perfect travel (flying) setup in terms of a bag to use while there and something to put it in for airport portions...

I think if I dont put a laptop in it and dont put anything in the other compartments other than the main, Id be able to stuff it to make it fit, then throw the laptop and other stuff in my old school backpack. Thatll be my 1 carry on and 1 "personal item". Once I get where Im going, pull the Lowepro out, load it for the day and work like that. Not ideal, but I figure any backpack thatll fit in a 1510 loaded wont hold the stuff I want to carry anyway.

I *NEED* a Peli to keep my gear locked up at events so I dont have to run to my car..and like you I need a roller for flying so that locks me into a 1510.

I think hunts has the Pelican cases so Ill drop by there next time I have a chance.

One thing to keep in mind is damn gear adds up fast. My bag right now is loaded for 48hrs of TriState (which I had to bail) and it's 30lbs. 7D, RebelXT+Grip, 24-105, Sigma 10-20, 70-200 2.8, 580EX, Camera chargers, 2 of each battery, some AAs, my TI83, 1 Superclamp, 1 Magic Arm, Magic Arm camera adapter thing, my 14" laptop and the power brick for said laptop. Doesnt seem like much..

^ yeah, it adds up fast. The sling 20 I took to Antigua had:
    5D & 7D
    17-40
    28-75
    100-400
    24L II
and a ton of small accessories...

and it was heavy enough it broke the hardware on the shoulder strap I put on it because my OTHER bag was also a backpack... it was a cheap gravis shoulder strap, but damn...

and the peli idea isn't a bad one. I DO NOT want to shoot out of the roller, so it's for transport only. The locking idea is great, as is the waterproof for me (on the boat) and then the fact you could check it if you had to and then theft would be the only concern? The only thing I don't love about it is the issue with having a seat sized bag to pull out of it when you get to your seat with your ipad/mag etc... But I have a small/slim DaKine backpack that could be perfect that I could just carry as well? I was just hoping to have it in an outside pocket like the TT rollers, but maybe I can rig up an easy way to tie/strap it to the peli for the airport portions?

I'm also curious about the color for the pelican? I'm a fan of basic black for most things, but it might get too hot? Also, yellow/orange/red would be easier to spot if you ever had to check it? Not sure if drawing attention is a good or bad thing with something like this because a thief will notice it regardless of the color no?

Black definitely blends in..but its classy and looks professional IMO. It doesnt really stick out like a sore thumb when you gotta stash it in a corner somewhere..but doesnt blend in so much you couldnt look and see its there. . My 1560 DEFINITELY stuck out and was kinda annoying. My aunt threw a white sheet over it when I was shooting a party at her house.

    what color was it?
and yeah, I agree. Silver is another option. If they had white I'd get it in a heartbeat...

You guys are going to end up with russian dolls by the end of it: Lens bag inside of a ziploc bag inside of a camera bag inside of a Pelican Box inside of a Roller Bag inside of a military duffle inside of an old fashioned trunk inside of a Mini Cooper inside of a Suburban. Start unpacking after lunch and be ready to shoot that sunset!
