    Default  GPS photo-tagging?

I was wondering if anyone has one of those clever little devices that adds GPS data to all your photos either as you take them, or after the fact so that the location is embedded in the exif when you upload them? I'd like to pick one up as a christmas present, just starting my search and research today XD

What kind of camera are you using? Nikon's unit is finally shipping, IIRC.

oh, handy it would be for a nikon D200 with possible upgrade to 300 soonish.

Ok so the Nikon thing is the GP-1 looks like $200 ish. Nikonusa Amazon (not available)

Looks like the $99 solution is from pc-mobile, the GN-1

Does anyone have any experience using the sort of thing where you add the GPS info later, like this card-reader device the ATP photo finder?

Because I'm a slacker I was hoping for something that I could walk into a store and buy because I don't have time to wait on shipping >.<

    har har

trying to find a place that is actually shipping was sort of challenging o_0 Lots and lots of "pay now and we'll send you one when we get it!" deals. Ended up buying the GP-1 from 17photo.com after calling to see if they actually had any stock. So! this thing better rock XD

I personally wouldn't trust the units that actually modify your images files with the data - sounds like an accident just waiting to happen.

I've actually done this and it works great. I have an old handheld Garmin and took pictures of it while my brother and I were deer hunting. I used it to mark the places we were scoping out so we could come back if we ever wanted to. I think they're in my photobucket: kwright286 if I'm not mistaken. A D700 is already a hog without attaching more trinkets to it.

With a GPS unit that can log your path and download to PC and some software you can geotag your pictures after the fact. I know there are a few apps for it. cross references your EXIF time stamp with the GPS log.

I've used both methods: connecting the Garmin to my D200 with an interface cable, and geotagging the photos based on timestamp.

I wouldn't worry about messing up your photos - it just writes to the GPS EXIF field.

The former method is pretty much bulletproof, but has the obvious limitation that you have to either wait for your GPS to acquire a signal before taking a picture, or leave your GPS on all the time. I used this for my last trip to Australia and rarely had the patience to wait for the GPS to acquire a signal. Mind you, I have an older Garmin unit that takes forever to get a signal.

The latter method relies on having the time set correctly in your camera, obviously. You just leave the GPS in track-collecting mode and when you go to download your pictures, it matches up locations with photos based on the timestamps. I think the software I used was called GPS-photo. It was reasonably cheap, too.

Cool well I'm sure we'll play with the Nikon dohikey and see how awesome it is! My bf I think wanted more something that just automatically does everything, and is small and just hooks right up, myself I think I'd prefer a separate GPS with timestamp sync just for the flexibility of , you know, having a handheld GPS I tend to get lost in the woods! If I end up picking up a little GPS for myself we can compare how long it takes to get a signal and battery life and all that fun stuff v cost (though at $200, it's not really a significant difference between that and a handheld. )

Just to clarify - I was using the MC-35 GPS adapter cable (which you should be able to get for about $80; less if you get a no-name knock-off), not the above-mentioned GP-1. Looking at the specs for the GP-1, it takes about 45 seconds to acquire satellites from cold start, so it's not much faster than my Garmin handheld. The GP-1 does look a lot more convenient though, if you don't already have a handheld GPS and don't mind the extra cost over just getting the cable.

I just bought a Holux M241, its 60$ and saves the data either in time or distance (IE : every 1-120 seconds, or 50-5000ft). You download the log at the end of the day with the software, pop over to GeoSetter (free!) and it will update the timeshot with the log and figure out where you shot everything. I use RAW so this program will add the data to the XMP file (and not touch the original file!) and in Bridge / aperture / lightroom you'll see the location. And when you save the raws to JPGs it inserts the info as well, automatically. The GeoSetter even has an option to tag for flickr, and then you use the geotag flickr page and itll put all the tagged photos on Flickr's map.
Its worked out pretty well, I went all over Acadia and it worked nearly flawlessly, except 2 times, once when i had a dead battery, and it tried to locate me in costa rica... and another time when it just Stopped logging - don't know if I pressed the stop button or not.. its possible.
But the GPS is pretty damn sensitive. even works in doors sometimes :O
only complaints I have is that the battery lasts about a day. not bad, but if your camping for a week, you need to bring a fair number of batteries. Course, they are AA's so their cheap and easy to find, no recharging. Other issue is IF the battery dies while the unit is on, or it looses signal under a bridge or tunnel, it can take 10-20 minutes to figure out where it is again :/ which is odd because when it starts up in the AM its usually takes about 10 Seconds to locate you. the cold starts must be REALLY cold.
If you wanna know more Im working through all my images from Acadia now and can give you some idea on how it works. Workflow is basically 2 extra steps, download the track, which you can do while downloading your images at the end of the day, or save all up on the GPS and do it at the end of the vacation. it says 130K locations, which i still haven't hit 2 weeks later. the 2nd step is adding your GPS data to the files, which is pretty easy. I just open the directory I saved them to, click the sync button and it finds them, and tells you how many are in the tracks. Only problem is the Exif tool it uses is kind of slow (10-15 minutes for 200 files or so, which is slow for just writing XMP files). If you overwrite the original image, it will make a backup of the original AND write another copy that will include the embedded Exif with the location data but that takes for-EVER),
